Yet, there were good things that came out of it as well.
I must come back when the dust settles in my head from this show.
Tomorrow I will post more.
I hope this post will continue for awhile.
Thanks,

All I can say is WOW.
Normally I would never watch a show like that as

Hey, did anyone tape it??
Well, I watched wife swap too and let me tell you I am not happy about the whole thing. I really thought this would be an opportunity to portray a same sex household in a positive light. I sure was wrong.
OK,I would love to know why they chose the families they did. Was there some hidden agenda there? They choose this wealthy family to exemplify the straight couple and a lower middle class family for the lesbian household. I know many GLBT families that live in homes similar to the straight family's home, earn a generous income, and strive for excellence in their homes and with their children.
Then there's the issue of parenting, not every GLBT parent allows their children to watch age inappropriate television, or let them keep their room a mess, etc... and showing that book "Raising the Oppositional Defiant Child" and correlating that with their sexuality was preposterous. Someone could have given them that book as a gag for all we know. Even if their daughter was really oppositional defiant it would not be because she had two mothers.
Another thing, that straight woman's fear for her daughter's safety with that very nice woman was ignorant. What a rediculous statement to make. What the hell was the producer/director thinking while allowing some of these things that were incinuated to have been said on the show? I think they were trying to make us look bad, not expose our lives in a positive light.
I really thought that this show was going to be good. I thought it would help the American public see that we are as "normal" as they are. Instead, it made the Republican/Christian look so successful and the "typical" lesbian family look like failures in all aspects of their life. I do not take my daughter to gay bars, even if we had a gay resturant I wouldn't ONLY eat there. They made it look like their daughter was never exposed to straight people and was therefore destined to be a lesbian. She said "children model behavior" well, being GLBT doesn't work like that - it's not a learned behavior, it's a genetic trait.
OK, I could say more but I think you're getting my point - I am very disappointed.

The ads for it were pretty bad too.
The straight lady was a witch... I did not see anything positive coming from her at all.
Usually in that show the people are set in their ways, but they see positive in their new environment. In this case, I don't think the straight lady brought anything positive back with her. I don't know. Guess I am rambling a little bit here!!!
I also thought it was interesting at the end... the lesbians kissed on the cheek but the straight people on the lips!
Brownie,
I think thats because the one girl tripped a little when they walked up to eachother. But now that I am thinking about it, I don't recall seeing them kiss on the lips ever - did they?
That straight lady infuriated me, I think at the end when she prayed for the lesbian couple she was just being condescending - like they were in dire need of her prayers.
ugh.

Could they have chosen a worse lesbian family? I don't know, but this one was very...
I am not sure what to call it. I am not sure I believe in making kids only watch G rated things. In Europe kids see and do just about everything. They can go out and order a beer if they want. But you never see them drunk or acting disrespectful to the oppisite sex or their elders. I just think it is because they are exposed to everything and so later on it is not such a big deal and feeling of rebelion like it is here.
I think that the parents of the straight family did not show love and emotion to their kids. The kids are living in a boot camp practically. They will be robotic replicas of their parents. I think the lesbian family lack discipline and the straight family only knew extreme discipline. They both need some middle ground. But then again I do not have any children. It just seemed to me that the straight family was not "protecting" their children , but rather they were sheltering them from reality. Those kids will be shell shocked when they have to live in the real world someday.
I think that total lack of rules as in the lesbian family is not good either because how will the child learn that in real life there are consequences for breaking rules.
The straight father seemed to have an opened mind then once the wife was there he just froze up.
In my oppinion it was the children of both families who were most open minded and accepting.
The lesbian couple did have a good outcome in the end, and the straight family just went back to their institutional type home and family.
Now I am going to mention the very controversial part of the show. The straight woman who is African American and married to a white man. I remember when that was not allowed. And people used the Bible to justify why it was wrong by calling them unequally yolked.
Now it is allowed and accepted more than ever. How many people missed out on love, marriage and a happy family, because of those old beliefs?
Does anyone remember the straight lady telling the lesbian lady that she can keep her mouth shut and pretend she is not gay but that the black lady cannot pretend who she is?
People just do not get it do they?
I know I will have more to say on this. I hope it keeps going.
The people who did not catch the show can gain info about it from what we write and then post their comments.

I wasn't going to address the interracial thing, just because I thought it might cause bad arguments but since you brought it up.... I am certain that she and her children were not accepted with open arms into that white mans family or social circle. I think its pretty safe to say that in their world - especially since they are wealthy, Texans - she has experienced discrimination in some way. I thought she just might remember that as she began judging and critisizing the lesbian family. Apparently she forgot what that is like. Her mixed children will not get a fair shot at life, people still discriminate it's just not as bad as it was in the past. If she wants to preach about an ideal situation she should look at her own decision to marry a white man. She put her children at a disadvantage from day one.
Something else she did really made me mad, she said they were "shacking up", do we have any other option?
She acted so perfect, then when she got mad her true colors were shining through! What a TOS.
