Kim, How can you stand living there? Is this type of stuff going on all over the United States and I just don't know it? What a bunch of discrimintory morons. Esp over that stupid license plate, that is so blatently rude I can't believe it will materialize.
Thanks for keeping us educated on the intentions of the great state of virginia, but it really is very disappointing to hear. That could happen everywhere, very scary.

This is sickening. The worst kind of prejedice ever.
I think I will write letters to anyone and everyone, news papers, etc. To express my thought, oppinions and outrage. People need to be educated as well. I wonder if any of my letters will get printed or responded too.
I am no longer sitting in silence. I am lucky to have a supportive family and no job since I collect disability. The way I see it, I have nothing to lose unless I sit in silence.
Thanks for posting Kim.

How is that possible? I wish you would have got more info. You know, that state has many peole in it - I can't believe that no one is throwing a fit. It's insane how prejudiced the government is acting, it almost seems like Twilight Zone stuff. It is 2005 there too right? LOL

an order of adoption include information on whether the petitioner is known to engage in current voluntary homosexual activity or is unmarried and cohabiting with another adult to whom he is not related by blood or marriage.

I know everything you posted is condemnable, Kim, but the above sentence struck me more than anything - the fact that it refers to 'voluntary homosexual activity' is outrageous, seeming to suggest that people actually have homosexual acts forced upon them. Does this not seem to be deliberately inflammatory to you?

Thank you all for your posts. I wanted to comment on a couple of things.

How we can stand living here... well, we do want to move, we talk about it quite a bit and its something that we know we will do eventually. But we are most probbly here for awhile. Amanda really does not want to change schools, and we are determined to respect her wishes if at all possible. That leaves us with about 5 1/2 more years here, at least. Plus, Kim has a really good job here. Its been tough lately, but it is a good job. She was recently offered a job in CA, and we did discuss it briefly, but the pay for it is exactly what she is making here, but the cost of living there is MUCH higher, plus in reflecting how difficult it was for me to find a job here, neither of us are too eager to start job hunting for me again. Plus, now that I have lived here almost long enough to establish residency, I would like to finish my schooling here, rather than start all over paying out-of-state tuition elsewhere. So we have our reasons for sticking it out. That said, although we plan to marry here, we will not be starting our family here. I refuse to have a child in a state that is so obvioudly filled with bigotry and hate.

Laurie, your comment on writing letters made me think of something that just happened here. At our church, there is a very nice older woman (straight) who works closely with the leader of the local PFLAG on advancing the rights of gays and lesbians. The two of them decided to take out a full-page ad in the local paper basically opposing the defining of marriage as between one man and one woman. For this ad, they wrote up a very nice form letter and then collected signatures. The ad will feature the letter and the names of all who signed in agreement with it (including Kim and I). Well the lady from church, before begining this, called up the newspaper to get information on cost, submission dates, etc. Well, the newspaper told her that yes, she could place the ad, but they begged her to pray on the matter and to think long and hard
