Questions for anyone out here that can answer, those that have had therapy or their children having had it or still doing so..
Question?..
My Son meets Thursday with new Therapist.. I am going along to meet Him and support my son...
What do I look for in this therapist?.. Should I be looking for anything?...

Cat, I didn't have an answer to your question, but this might help....
Questions to ask a therapist.
About Them

  • What are your areas of expertise or interest?
  • How often do you treat people with my diagnosis/problems?
  • What kind of training do you have?

About Your Needs

  • What sort of treatment do you use to help people with my diagnosis/problems?
  • What sort of approach will we use?
  • What will be my role in treatment?
  • What would be the role of my family in treatment?

About Finances

  • What are your fees?
  • What kind of insurance do you accept?
  • How often will we meet and about how long might I be in therapy?
  • How does payment work here (e.g., do you pay first and then get reimbursed by the insurance company or do they bill your insurance company directly

Hope that helps you, sorry it wasn't my own words/ideas.

Hugs

I would say that you should ask any question that comes to mind. There are no dumb questions, no inappropriate questions. Your questions will determine if the therapist fits your son's needs. I know that I don't know you well, but this is what I've learned.

Cat, I'm a firm believer in one important question. Do you support gay parents? No sense sending him to someone who's going to work against your life style. Find out what they believe in, before you waste time and money. My therapist for my children totally supported me. When I went in to talk with her, I came right out and said I'm gay. What is your opinion about that? We discussed a lot that day, especially after I felt comfortable with her. She also helped with the EX-H situation. She convinced him to come in and talk with her, and wanted to see the children in the same room with him. When he left, she said the children were not as close to him as they were to me. We moved forward from there and everything worked out well.

Just my opinion....not looking for one to turn your son into pro gay, but, certainly not one who's going to feed him bad information and fuel the hurting that's already there with his father.

still in prayer for your son,

As for what to look for in a T Sandra gave you some excellent questions. I would definitely print those out (or write them down) if you want to get a "feel" for this this therapist's qualifications.

Oh Gosh Halo!~~ I couldn't say that!.. My Son lives with my ex in Vt. ~I live here with my partner in Mass.. My son knows she is my bestest friend and so far maybe thats it.. He knows we live together and I know he's intelligent so he most likely knows more but we haven't discussed it because at this time it's not about us ..but him.. His problems are what I am focusing on.. Ex thinks I am alone..No body in my life.. Best to keep it like that as long as possible..

Cat,

That's right, so sorry...but, if it does come up during the sessions, have you thought about what you want to happen at that point?

No I haven't thought that far Halo Hon.. But.. I will not lie to my son.. I will be honest if he asks.. My ex will be balistic of course, but well so what else is new?.. As long as my son wants me in his life I will be there.. I will respect his desires for that....Thats as far as I am for now...
Thanks "CAT
