Last night, Caly and I ventured out to see what the local lesbian social group in Knoxville is all about.

Yes Caly, mom's can be that way! My real mother had a fight with my Dad because I was playing football with the boys! He told her to leave me alone and I was doing just fine. Every spring she insisted on dressing me up in a dress and patent leather shoes, ewww. Dad always promised me patent leather tennis shoes if we ever saw any....lol My mom was worried that the boys would try to grab my breasts, ya think she would have encouraged that type of activity more considering how I turned out! lol They never know do they? I don't know that I'd be comfortable at a totally lesbian gathering, unless it was everyone from this board who I already know (not that they'd necessarily want to hang with me, >smirk<).

I don't know...I had to work some of the comedy clubs down there and was not allowed to do any gay material or let on that I was a lesbian. That from the club owners. So I would be careful about assuming the restaurant owners know just what the group is about.
The only time we could mention anything gay was at a club strictly for gay comedy.
I would maybe be careful until you know the venue situation. Tenn. Is a very undergraound gay community, but it is pretty large too. Unless everyone of them were at the show.
I would first assume it was a low key thing. one of those don't ask don't tell things. I have performed in just about all the major cities and towns in Tenn. I get the warning about not doing anything about gay comedy everytime because it is on my promo package.
It's just different down there.

Hey TING and Caly:

Sorry it wasn't as positive of an experience as you might have hoped for. If I were you, I would give it maybe 2 more tries. I know that where I live, people can be rather paranoid about social situations. Perhaps this group of people need a chance to build trust in you.

Here where I live we have 3 gay churches. I know you must think that we have a large gay community. It may very well be large. However, all three churches to me are Baptist in their teachings. Each argue over whatever ( I don't know exactly what split them up) and the congregations in all three are small. It seems to me that they should stick together. I'm not much into Baptist type teachings, which is why I've not been active in any of the three.

Social activity here is either church, the local gay bar (that resides in the bad part of the city), or drive to Charlotte. That's it. I'm scared to venture into a bar by myself. I'm 5'4 116 lbs. One Amazon woman could break me to pieces like a bread stick.

I wanted to tell you this story. I've visited all three of the local gay churches. One of them left a HUGE lasting impression upon me. I'll never forget this one Sunday a couple of years ago! Everyone in the church was very friendly. But, they were too friendly. Each part of the service was aimed at me. I've never been singled out like that in my whole entire life! During one point in the service a lady announces,

"Today, we will allow our visitor, bug to run our sound equipment."

Huh? Run your sound equipment. I don't think so. I honestly felt like I was on planet Mars and they had never seen a human being before! When they began praying and eyes were closed, I made a break for it.

For weeks after the service I felt so confused. I wondered if I might not be gay. But, I've learned over the years that just like heterosexuals there are all different kinds of gays/lesbians. There are all kinds of different churches as well.

Hugs,

bug

LOLOLOL! Look out! This could be strike 1 with the in-laws.
For some reason when I came out my Mom got worried everytime I wore something different or did not put on full make-up face etc,
I was a tomboy growing up and probably the only little girl who did not have to ask for a barbie or any dolls for that matter. My Mom was always throwing them in front of me, sort of like trying to teach a lazy dog to play fetch.
When I came out as an adult, she always just happened to find "pretty little tops" for me to where, 'Oh and by the way I happened to have some extra lipstick you should try out".
These "Pretty little tops" were gawdy with gold lamay flowers and such.
She got really mad when I put them in the Amvets bag.
