(Hartford-WTNH, Apr. 20, 2005 Updated 11:00 PM ) _ It's a first for Connecticut and for the nation.
With a stroke of the pen from Governor Jodi Rell, Same Sex Civil Unions are now legal in Connecticut. The state is the first in the country to do so without being forced by the courts.
Altho with Lise's status as an "alien" we can not take advantage of it at this point it is great step forward!

It's certainly a step although I notice that the article said this (emphasis mine):
The debate lasted less than an hour but the only openly gay member of the State Senate saying a new section of the bill defining marriage as only between one man and one woman didn't change anything.
Sen. Andrew MacDonald, (D) Stamford, says, "I hope it was not an effort to marginalize same-sex couples in our state but it had no substantive rights associated with it."
I think there is a typo or a grammatical error in there somewhere.

----But it sounds as though when they added the legalization of same sex civil unions, they also clarified that marriage is between one man and one woman only.----
No errror in your interpetation Pam...The Bill flew through the house of Rep as is but when it hit the Senate they added in the "defination of marriage". Not perfect in any sense but a step in the right direction. The governor signed it immediately because it DID have the marriage thing and because she wanted it a done deal before the Catholics march on the captial on Sunday.
