I just read her book. It's an easy read. You can do it within 6 hrs. Went to bed at 8 because of a cold, can't sleep so picked up "Yeah, I Said It." by Wanda Sykes and read from 9pm to 2am. An excerp:
It seems to me that the conservatives are hung up on the word "marriage." I say, let them keep marriage. It's just a word, terminology. Gays just want their union to be legally recognized across the country. What they really want are the same benefits that marriage offers, which in my opinion are none. So gay couples should just come up with a word other than marriage that means the same thing. Hell, come up with something that's better than marriage. Call it Mardi Gras! "I just got my invitation to Carol and Janet's Mardi Gras." Come on, who don't like a good Mardi Gras? You can't be mad about that. "Jake and Lester been Mardi Gras'd for thirty years." Don't let a word get in the way of your rights. Mardi Gras would be perfect. Gays love a good parade; have your Mardi Gras on a float...It will cat on. "is this her first Mardi Gras?" "No, this is her second. She has three kids from a previous Mardi Gras."
Recently Married Person: Damn, I gotta go to the in-laws for Thanksgiving. I hate going over there. They always pressuring me about how much money I make and about having children.
Recently Mardi Gras'd Person: Well, since our parents rejected us because we're gay, why don't we have Thanksgiving together with all of our other rejected friends? We can all get drunk and go out dancing until the early morning.
Recently Married Person: Damn, I wish I had a Mardi Gras.

Sounds like a great book Eastie! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to look for it.
Hugs!

I'll admit - up until I read this excerp, I never cared much for Wanda. Always thought she was loud and crass. But OMG, I LOVE the mardi gras vs. marriage terminology
Cute!
Because I lived in New Orleans and have been to many Mardi Gras I know what they are like. I had a ball. My mother came to Mardi Gras to visit me (very suck up person) she had a ball I never seen her act so wild.
I think it's the perfect renaming!
"I never cared much for Wanda. Always thought she was loud and crass."
Her image is not allowed to set foot in our house in any way, shape or form...Lise DESPISES her. We watch the comedy channel alot and if she comes on a shoe gets thrown at the tv and the channel gets changed!

So much stays unknown 'til the time has come,
Did you ever imagine you could feel so strong,
And what you fear just turn into relief,
Yes see your doubt become your own belief,
Though tears don't come to cry some grief away,
The tears will help to keep your need at bay,
