When I used to go to Catholic school as a kid, every year that I went to school, we had to sell chocolate bars, and we had to go door to door doing it. It was very dangerous for me to do that. I had to be able to count my money, while at the same time trying to keep safe. The fortunate thing is I lived in an apartment complex, and I wasn't too far from home.
But still the danger was there. My mom, helped out by taking some orders for me at her job. She used to work at Chrysler, in a city, in Delaware called Newark. All of the parents did the same thing every year. No one was obligated, the offer was just an offer, to help out my school, and possibly win a Monte Carlo. Some of the money went to the school that I went to, mainly it was to help support the nuns that lived in the convent. But then again, they did have bingo, lol.
But the kids did win a prize for their efforts, and it taught them how to count money, not to mention, it got the parents involved. Now today, when a young lady, that is a part of the Girl Scouts wants my order for girl scout cookies, I just dig in, choose my cookies, and pay my money. I'm not obligated, I do it because I want to. I don't win a prize, but I get a good feeling inside, knowing that I helped a postive organization. But it's all at how you look at it.
Just thought I share a small experience from a miniature sales person.

I remember doing the door-to-door thing too - hated it! Yes, my mother would go with me b/c of how dangerous it was.
I just sometimes wonder where our school tax money goes? Even for the fundraisers that are for special programs not covered by our tax dollars, the overhead that the districts have to pay for these fund raisers could not possibly make the profits worth it? I dunno. I just think there's got to be a better way than soliciting junk and putting kids in danger (I still have kids that come to the door alone with this stuff!).

Well, just a gentle question, or suggestion, why don't you call up the school that's sponsoring the door to door activity, and find out, it's better to ask then to sit and wonder, isn't it? If you make your concerns known about the safety of the kids going door to door, then maybe the people in charge will wake up, and find a safer way for kids to do this.

I hated going door to door as a kid for those reasons. But these days it is way to dangerous than when I was a kid.
I think they should have more things at school for the public to raise the money.
I remember our band (yes, I was a band rat.) well, we used to have regular spaghetti dinners at the school and we raised alot of money that way. People could eat there or take out by bringing their own bowls etc. It was all you could eat. (Pasta is cheap)
Oh and car washes work. I always let them wash my car.
I hate when they pound on the door and get all the dogs barking and I don't have any cash, and if I did have cash, these days I do not want them to know it, lol. I just tell them I am broke.
As for Girl Scout cookies, I just cannot resist those. I will splurge for the cookies.

Sadie,
I participated only once in a silly fund raiser. Once they start giving them to the kids it goes on and on and on. I simply said no, I've already ordered and no to the kids. I refused to get caught up in those types of activities. Just tell me what school supplies to get for my children and it's a done deal. I do donate school sup[plies and food drives when the school asks for support. The selling game is too complicated and who has the time to run after everyone asking for money? Not me! lol
Best of luck with it all.

I agree Beth. I HATE fundraisers. I'd much rather send in extra school supplies or make a monetary donation than hit up friends for money.
That said, I do like two of the fundraisers my kids do, mainly because I like the products! DD2's preschool sells wrapping paper, the expensive kind but I like it. DD1's school district sells coupon books containing coupons from most area businesses. It's a really good deal.
Here at work, we just stick our flyers on the table in the kitchen. That works for us. No one feels pressured that way. We're a big office so people don't really notice if you buy from one person but not from someone else.
Beth - here's a funny story for you. I grow up in a house where school sales were not allowed due to the candy scheme. My little sister had to sale candy bars. She was selling like a champ. She sold a total of 8 boxes by herself (50 bars in each box). When the night before the candy money was due my mom went to tally the money to make sure it was all there. She had her 100.00 for the two boxes she sold at work. My little sister brought her the money she had. There was only 20.00 there. She stated she lost the money. So need less to say we all had to search the house for the missing money. While checking in her room my mom found all the missing money (but it wasn't the money she found). She found the candy wrappers hidden under my little sister's bed. She had eaten 380 candy bars by her self!!! My mom had to fill in the missing money. She wasn't happy at all. And we weren't allowed to sale anything again.

Tooo funny. That sounds like something my DD would do! lol She took $500 dollars out of my nights take for my bar. She thought I wouldn't miss it! ha ha ha....she didn't spend it, she just wanted cash in her pocket! She was very young. I called a police officer friend of mine down to the bar to confront her, ;) it was a set up; she was so scared and said she didn't mean to hurt me. She didn't understand at her age what $500.00 was worth! lol Now she does and I can leave money anywhere in the house now and the kids never touch it. BTW the friend went easy on her, I didn't want her to be scared of authority figures. She played the role of a good guy, I was very clear about that. :)
