Have you all heard about what's happening at our gas stations? Our prices are going up too, supposedly due to Katrina. It's recently reached £1.07 / litre in places. Last month it was £.84. I'll come back later with some conversions for you ;)

The long-haul truckers are seriously complaining and have threatened a 'slow down'. Apparently, this is where they drive their trucks ten miles and hour on the highways.. and even slower through towns, in order to protest. They want relief such as France has given, in the form of cutting petrol taxes paid at the pump. They're also rather upset that the EU nations get cheaper prices from their suppliers to begin with. The slow-down is threatened to begin tomorrow, on Wed.

Panic buying has begun. Sunday night, we saw something in the news regarding the threat of slowdown for the first time. Loubie's sis remarked that the petrol station outside of Asda .. (owned by and the UK version of WalMart ) who always has the cheapest gas around.. was sold out. Closed

Nony,

Things are starting to calm down here with the gas prices. Unfortunately, I don't think the prices will ever go back to Pre Katrina! I think this was just one great excuse to raise the prices! :(

I've been riding my motorcycle and I guess I should go out and at least start my car to clean the pipes some! lol

The sad part is the way these prices are hitting people's pockets. When you now have to pay an extra $150 a month towards gas, it hurts those who live paycheck to paycheck. People are scared now. I hate that winter is coming and I will be forced to drive again. If I had the option of riding a train like you, I would ride the train. I'm an ex transportation officer as well, and those slow downs can cause too much chaos. Besides, the fact that you can coordinate events like that so much easier than here in the states. Major boycotts are a thing of the past over here. We can't get any form of resistance going because people don't want to get involved and merely want to survive the times! It's sad, because we can have a big impact on big business oil companies, by not shopping inside their convenience stores. Even store owners claim they don't listen to gas complaints, especially when people will walk in and pay high prices on goods and services offered in their stores.

I hope things will calm down for you over there. In the meantime, take a nice snack, a good book and enjoy your train ride to work! :)

Hi nony,
I think the panick stage has calmed a bit here. In Indianapolis we still pay $3.00 a gallon.
Sheila and I are only using one car now. We try to get our errands run close to home and all at one time.
Luckily she only works about five minuets from home.
They let some of the commuters switch stores so they can work closer to their homes now.
I wish we had public transportation here like the do over there.
I think we would only own one car then.
Not sure why we cannot change transportation to run like those air hocky pucks. When the light turns red the force of air clicks over to shut down and everyone comes to a stop. Lol.
I hope things calm down for you over there very soon.
Hugs,
Laurie

I actually managed to never have to pay $3.00 or more per gallon at least not yet LOL

I sensed something the day before the Hurricane hit when I noticed the price at some stations had jumped from $2.48 to $2.58 over night. I decided to fill up at the next station still selling for $2.48.

its not much better here Nony- we are paying $1.60 a litre - its almost a luxury to be able to drive a car. I dont have a choice, there is no public transport to where i work.
The Govt must be doing very well out of it though, creaming that 12.5% GST off the top of that.... I think the least they could do is lower the petrol taxes.

I just *knew* I shoulda learned to ride a horse!!
