Have you all heard about what's happening at our gas stations? Our prices are going up too, supposedly due to Katrina. It's recently reached £1.07 / litre in places. Last month it was £.84. I'll come back later with some conversions for you ;)

The long-haul truckers are seriously complaining and have threatened a 'slow down'. Apparently, this is where they drive their trucks ten miles and hour on the highways.. and even slower through towns, in order to protest. They want relief such as France has given, in the form of cutting petrol taxes paid at the pump. They're also rather upset that the EU nations get cheaper prices from their suppliers to begin with. The slow-down is threatened to begin tomorrow, on Wed.

Panic buying has begun. Sunday night, we saw something in the news regarding the threat of slowdown for the first time. Loubie's sis remarked that the petrol station outside of Asda .. (owned by and the UK version of WalMart ) who always has the cheapest gas around.. was sold out. Closed

Oh wow! That is way over the top! That sounds way wrong. They sure know how to take advantage of people don't they?
They know we depend on gas to get to work etc. They are lower than snakes hind ends for doing this to people.

Laurie

It IS an awful lot by comparison. A hefty chunk of the price is due to the taxes... did I read 12% once? (Don't quote me on that one)

But by comparison, the UK also has fairly decent socialized medicine... paid through taxes. I can live with this.

Unfortunately, Katrina has led the oil companies to divert gasoline to the US market, creating shortages in some areas, and raising prices everywhere. For those dependent on driving for a living (raises hand, what with an hour long commute) it hurts, and it's scary. I suspect that translates to over $4 a gallon?

I'm seeing no lines whatsoever here, and prices as low as $2.97 a gallon.

Best wishes on finding a good source of petrol...
