What Do You Do To Get Yourself Motivated

Since it is Monday... what do you do to motivate yourself to do things that you absolutely do not feel like doing but need to or should do?
What are some things you really have to motivate yourself to do at home or at work?
For me sometimes I play music or turn on HGTV to get in the mood for doing certain things. Sometimes I have to really talk myself into it.
Sometimes I make rewards for myself like telling myself after I do this thing, I can relax and do computer time etc.
Hugs,
Laurie

Well, it depends upon the sitation for me. I was motivated to return to college and pursue a degree because I wanted a better life for myself. Good question Laurie!

Absolutely nothing! I should be finding an inspiration to go out and rake the leave and mowed the lawn but here I am, typing away onto the messageboard. You would think I'll be out there doing all this and getting ready for my vacation but nooo...no motivation at all. It's suppose to be raining again tomorrow so I should be out there taking care of the yard.
I need to pack, the flight at 8am Thursday.
I need to shop for new strapless bra for the dress, the flight at 8am Thursday.
I need to clean the car out, the flight at 8am Thursday.
I need to stop the mail, the flight at 8am Thursday.
I need to have a cracked window replace, the flight at 8am Thursday.
I need to bring out my winter clothes since I don't want to face that chore when I get back, the flight at 8am Thursday.

Ok, now I'm motivated. *grin*

Hi Laurie, to get myself motivated I think of what I have planned for the day, get up and get them done and out of my hair. Sometimes if I let things like clothes, dishes, accumulating dust, get out of hand, that means I'm going to suffer. I need clean clothes, so I can be around other people without knocking them over. I need clean dishes, because the idea of eating off of a dirty plate and drink out of a dirty glass just doesn't appeal to me. And accumulating dust, well that's kind of self-explanatory: sinuses, sneezing, and choking because of the dust. I mean, I live by myself, and I'm the only one that has to do them. Oh yeah, I have to maintain the clean and hospitable atmosphere of my home, so that means when guests come over, my apartment, must be warm, welcoming and clean. I may be a butch, but I'm clean, orderly, and I want any and everyone to come into a nice clean apartment. If I have things piling up on me, then nothing else will be accomplished. It may sound vain, but that's how I was raised. Oh yeah, having someone that is just a motivated for peace, orderliness, and cleanliness is important also.

I learned my motivation from my mom, from watching her take care of me, herself, my brother, and our home. And at the same time, she had to work to take care of it all. She is my example of an excellent motivator.

To be honest, there are times when I don't want to do anything. But I know things have to get done and get out of my way, so I can come here, play with you ladies, and keep adding on to my story, and try to make it funny, entertaining, and for someone to read it. And, of course, a little pat on the head(softly please), let's me know that I'm doing a good job.

Hugs!

I definitely need to pay attention to the responses here. I'm the last person to ask about how to get motivated these days. I've had a tremendously difficult time getting motivated lately, especially at work. Over the last few weeks, however, I've been feeling better about things. Some unknowns and fears have been taken care of, and that's helped a lot. 15 years ago, I was extremely self-motivated and self-disciplined--a perfectionist really--then my therapist knocked some sense into me and got me to lower my standards.

Here are other things that have helped me lately: Creating a comfortable, pleasing environment helps motivate me. My office is sort of like a cozy dorm room. I have lots of pictures of the girls and Caly, I use lamps instead of the flourescent lights, I listen to good music, and I brew a pot of fresh coffee every morning when I come in. I have my morning rituals that start off my day on a good note. When my environment is positive, I feel better about working.

I give myself rewards too--when I finish proofing this report, I can post, for example. Sometimes just forcing myself to do one small task gets the ball rolling. I think my meds slow me down, and that's not good. But, I get my job done.

Planning ahead keeps me motivated. Thinking about the future and figuring out what I want and need to do to get there helps me start taking steps to make it happen.

Exercise is a big problem in the motivation department. If I can get into a routine where I go consistently for a couple of weeks, I'm good to go. Fortunately, I'm at that point. Also, not being able to fit into my clothes is a huge motivator!

Good question!

I so agree with having a comfy and pleasing environment.
I need motivation to execise.
I have been reading about you and caly working out and I/we really need to quit talking about it and start doing it!
That and quiting smoking are the 2 hardest things for me.
In other words it is so easy to let myself go, lol.

Laurie

Thanks for the reminder. Oh, I did rake the leaves and mowed the lawn. One thing checked off the list before 8am flight Thursday. *grin"

I had another story about motivation that I wanted to share. But, please Laurie, don't feel as if you must reply. I don't want to wear you out. LOL

Back in 2000, I developed a crush on one of the moms at the PFLAG meetings I began to attend. She befriended me. And, I was able to get to know her. She liked to run. She ever so often would run in 5k races. Well, to impress her, I began running. At first, all I could muster was 1 mile at a time. Unfortunately, she did not return my affections. And, her husband was not too happy with me especially after the well written love poem mailed to her. I continued to run though. And, am now able to run 6 to 7 miles at a time.

Thank you Kathy- the PFLAG mom for being such an inspiration and motivation.
