Caly and I had a great day on Saturday. We spent the day at a Human Rights Campaign rally and march to celebrate and honor National Coming Out day. It was the first time in several years that this type of event has taken place. We have a very active Human Rights Campaign and Rainbow Awareness group that has worked very hard to bring equality to the GLBT community in the area.

Our mayor endorsed the event and sent a representative from his office to speak. The endorsement was

Wow ting! I am proud of you two also.
It sounds like it was very positive. It feels good to be involved doesn't it?
It always feels good to see heterosexuals out in support of us too.
Thanks for sharing this with us!!
Hugs,
Laurie

Sounds like a good day Ting.

Can I be an ignorant kiwi (not a FRUIT) and ask you something? Is it not illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation? Am I right in understanding this is what the demonstration was for?

Like Caly said, it is not illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation. I work at a state university (an organization that you would think would promote equality for everyone) but sexual orientation is not part of their non-discrimination policy. So, like Caly, I have to be careful about outing myself at work.

My Partner Sheila lost her job working in a school system do to her sexual orientation. We talked to a lawyer and he told us they can fire us for that and there are no law to protect us against it.

And all this time, I was lead to believe that the USA was the land of the *free*! (shaking my head in disbelief!)

is it really like that??? Sheeeeesh guys, I think I am finally getting some insight into what you are all up against.

I hadn't come out at work when I got my job because I never saw it as relevant to how well I could work... but when I broke up with Nat, I did talk about that with my co workers, they know I am seeing someone else... the one who isnt supportive keeps her objection to herself because she *has* to!

It seems that here the thing now is to be free to make new laws and amendments to the constitution so that if a few people do not like something, then they want to be sure that nobody can offend them by having or doing or living in a way that might offend them.
Now, as a smoker, I can understand not wanting people to smoke in public places. That I can understand,
But now they do not want us to be allowed to say Merry Christmas, because it offends those who do not believe in it.
So many things like that, that are turning our country into something it was never meant to be.
It was built on religious freedom, and to keep the government from being allowed to impose laws on religions and there beliefs etc.
Our constitution has so many amendments that seem to oppress many people rather than protect their freedom.
I love my country and am proud to have served it, but some of our people have a sense that it is their freedom to oppress other's.
I will be so happy when the Bush regime is out of office!!!
Hugs,
Laurie
