Knock knock...

while that may sound like my call for entrance, it is actually my head tapping on the outer wall of the LL board.

It has been a frustrating weekend around ivillage, with three boards debating the legitimacy of gay parenthood and related issues.

It is simply incredulous to see how much ignorance lies latent around this country and perhaps the world. I've been patiently refuting people who thinks ya have to have opposite bits - whether or not one is capable of reproduction or desirous of reproduction - in order to have a valid relationship and legitimacy to parent.

Remember that Fine Young Cannibals song? It drives me crazy...

the most recent comment concerns an emergency school measure passed by Congress that provides for vouchers in the disaster stricken areas. When I made mention of the fact they should ascertain there is no discrimination against gays, either gay students or the children of gay parents, I was met with this comment "why on earth would gays ever send their kids to a Catholic school, or any traditional religious school?"

Knock knock knock knock...

yet all we can do is to keep on keeping on, if need be, one person at a time. For some, we may well be THE token gay person they ever knowingly encountered. I dunno, mebbe this is something they can gossip over for hours... "I talked to a gay person!"

Not sure how you host this type of debate without losing your cool :)

Oh wow, Judy. That must have been horrendous. I've experienced the same prejudice from some people very close to me, and the hurt and pain is so deep that it can't be put into words.

You always "speak" so eloquently here!

Hugs!

Seems like for every step forward I see in our quest for equality, I see a step back as you have described. Good for you for taking the ignorance head on.

Wow! I just want to knock my head too after reading things like this. Knock knock... ohhhh... knock...owww.
Anyway, stupid is as stupid does.
I think people just truly do not understand us nelle, they still think it is a choice. They can never walk in our shoes.
Education is the key. But they have to be willing to listen and not challenge.
Hugs,
Laurie
