A new family member!

I went to the animal shelter today to get 2 kittens. I thought about it a long time and decided I wanted a kitten, then I thought one might get lonely so I better get two. I have 2 dogs and 2 birds so why not 2 kittens.

Well, when I got there I didn't fall in love with any kittens but there was a puppy that caught my eye immediately. He is absolutely adorable and I am in love already!

I went to the shelter for kittens and brought home a pit bull cross. He is only 4 months old, has a blue eye and a brown eye, he is white chested and partially white faced the rest of him is gray/tan with black spots. He is fantastic!

My sisters are mad at me, they think he isn't safe. I have done my research and will do what is right and handle him appropriately. I would never put a human or animal at risk. He is harmless now but I am aware of potential troubles and how to best avoid them. I am happy and comfortable with my decision.

Oh, his name is Sid, and I'm in love.....

Hey Sandra,

I'm happy for you and your new furbaby, Sid. Awwwwwwwwww! Oh btw, you are cute in your picture. I'm a softie when it comes to puppies, no matter what breed he or she is. I just love to hug them. Of course, if I had a pet dog or kitten, I just love to gently pick them up and hug and nuzzle their cold wet noses.

*giggle.

Awwww, hugs to you and to Sid

*waves to Sid.

Hugs,

Sebastian

Awwwwwwwwww, he sounds like a sweet baby. I was a groomer and have groomed so many pit bulls and none of them were mean Sandra. I think they have to be trained or neglected etc, to become that way. It sure sounds like your baby will have a good home and a good mommy to love him so, he should be fine.
My neighbor has two pitbulls and they get out sometimes and always come to my yard to see us if we are out. They are big babies.
Just give him lot's of love and socialize him with people while he is young.
Hugs,
Laurie

I would love to have a dog/puppy.

Two weeks ago, I volunteered with The Humane Society at our local PetSmart. It was fun. The dogs/cats have entertaining personalities. We had this one Beagle mix that was very lively. He would see another dog being walked and go crazy barking and jumping. LOL He was harmless but his crazy little display of emotion scared passerbies. To help out, I tried to watch for dogs and stand in front of Buddy (that was his name) before he caught sight of the dog and owner.

"Hey Buddy, man what's happening!" I would say while petting him and trying to position my body to block the view. Sometimes it worked but most of the time it didn't. So, Buddy was placed in the "cat" room in a small cage. The cats were not happy about this. And, it took two women to get Buddy in that cage. The cats all sneezed in unison and cleared their noses with their little paws. I could only imagine what they must have been thinking...

"Not another dog; he stinks."

The cats did not stink. I guess all that licking works. I noticed two cats caged together- Fang & Little Man. They were both licking each other at the same time- taking a bath together. BTW- Little Man was not little. He was quite a large cat.

Finally, I found myself guarding the cat room. A customer had come in and she took a dog out of the cage. We have a sign that states you aren’t to remove an animal from its cage. She was supposed to ask for a Humane Society representative. The dog almost got away from her. That would have been crazy- a loose dog in PetSmart. While in the cat room, I was pleasantly entertained. One cat named Chuck was all into the playing around. Once a small girl walked by his cage and he slapped her on the head with his paw.

I helped out in walking the dogs too. I didn't know that dogs do not know how to be walked. I took out this Lab mix puppy. He wouldn’t walk. A PetSmart employee noticed us and stopped to give me some food. I coaxed the puppy with food the remainder of our walk.

The cats were fun but I do want a dog. That Saturday I carried on a conversation with a guy who had a Miniature Schnauzer puppy. I thought to myself how I would love to have a Miniature Schnauzer. I could learn how to groom it myself. Then, a week ago as I’m leaving my apartment, I’m greeted by a smiling Jack Russell. He was mighty cute. I petted him for a bit and asked him where his owner was. Shame on his owner! We aren’t supposed to have dogs or cats in the apartment complex where I live. Finally the owner came out of his apartment to get Jack.

I need a dog! LOL Congratulations on your new dog.

Oh I just love him! I almost forgot how much work they are. I was watching the Steelers play (and win!) this afternoon, eating and drinking and having fun. Then I remembered I had to run home and let the puppy out. UGH, he's worth it though.

My daughter brought her friend by, his family has been raising pit bulls for years. He said we have a rare one, and not to leave him out in the yard ever because pit lovers will steal him. I didn't plan on doing that anyway. Then he begged her to not let me get him neutered. I am having him fixed as soon as the vet gives me the green light. I could be a dog breeder, I have thought about it lots of times - but never in my wildest dreams did I ever entertain the thought of being a pit bull breeder.

Your PetSmart story cracked me up! I have been in similar situations and can picture it all in my head....

I have a min. Schnauzer - Heidi. I wouldn't even try grooming her myself. Jack Russels are very high strung, very high maintenence. You should take a pet compatibility quiz online - it may help you find a perfect match. You need a running partner.

Thanks for the congrats on Sid, I never thought I would have a man in my life again, but he is so awesome! LOL

Thanks so much for the links to useful boards. I was very active at a board called Canine Behavior years ago, before finding LL -no time for 2 boards. But I was going to go searching...

I've been reading very interesting things about pit bulls/pit bull myths. I won't bore you with the details. I am not going to be too concerned, but will always treat him with caution. I can say I will never leave him unsupervised with my little dogs. We are crate training him - since I don't know the temperment of his parents and how much genetic agression was passed on.

I am so excited about my new little boy!

Hugs,

Sandr
