Question re: coming out and parenting

Hi all,

I'm just stopping in to ask you for some advice. Here's the background info...A 40ish friend of mine just recently came out (within the last year) and moved in with her partner (6 months ago). This is her first lesbian relationship and she is very much in love and happy. However, she has a teenage daughter who (we think) may be struggling with this new family (the partner has 2 children who are well adjusted to lesbian families). Are there any resources that I can suggest for my friend or for her daughter? This is such a delicate situation especially for the daughter. I cannot imagine how confusing it must be to all of a sudden be put into a family that is completely new and same-sex. We all know that the teenage years are troublesome enough!!!

Thank you in advance for any insight or advice. I appreciate any feedback or experience you can bring to this!

Welcome Blue, how kind of you to seek advice for a friend.

I would suggest your local PFLAG (Parents and friends of lesbians and gays) organization for useful information.

Welcome, Blue! Glad you found us and posted. I think Sandra gave you some great advice. PFLAG is a wonderful resource. There may also be other GLBT support groups in your area. And, counseling (for both your friend and

Hi Blue and Welcome!

I recommend that you hook your friend and her daughter up with COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere).

Hi Blue,

As my partner already posted, I have a 14 year old son who I came out to last year as I was planning to move down South to be with my Lady.

Welcome blue,
PFLAG is the best route you could go in this situation. You should have a local group or one that is close to where you live.
Sounds like you have the good advice already here. so I won't repeat, just wanted to reinforce and welcome you. You are a sweet friend and I hope you are able to help find the help for this teen.
Hugs,
Laurie

Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful replies. I will look into the possibilities of there being a PFLAG or other group in this area (although I doubt it since we live in a northern Ontario, Canada city). I will also tell my friend about this group as I'm sure she and her partner would love to connect with others who share similiar experiences.

Again, thank you and I wish all of you happiness and love in your lives.
