LEXINGTON, KY. - The news that his boyfriend, Jason Johnson, was expelled from University of the Cumberlands was sinking in when Zac Dreyer started to spread the word. "He is being asked to leave the university because he is gay," Dreyer wrote Thursday on the Web site MySpace.com, the site school officials used to confront Johnson.
Johnson, a sophomore, was expelled from the university Thursday because he declared online that he is gay. In a statement released last week, the university's president, Jim Taylor, said students are held to a "higher standard" and that "students know the rules before they come to this institution."
The 2005-06 student handbook says: "Any student who engages in or promotes sexual behavior not consistent with Christian principles (including sex outside marriage and homosexuality) may be suspended or asked to withdraw." A copy of the handbook provided by the university confirmed the policy was not spelled out in 2003-04, when Johnson chose to attend.
After Dreyer's Web post on Thursday, students' blogs showed mixed reactions. Renee Kuder, a University of the Cumberlands senior, says some students are publicly questioning the school's values. "They're being hypocritical, by Christian standards," she said. "If we love each other, accept each other for who we are, why are they kicking him out?" Johnson said he hopes students' "faith is renewed because people are standing up for what they believe in."

Well, there's one thing I can say... at least Jason stood up for himself and challenged the university's outdated and opressive policies. Most gay and lesbians student would rather stay in the closet and die. And at lease his fellow students are speaking up and expressing their feelings, instead of being hyprocritical and hiding their true feelings.
This is a good thing. Isn't it amazing how when one student makes a stand on something, how the nicely ordered system, fears exposure and a false belief of collapse? If anything, they should applaud his honesty and follow the "Christian beliefs" that they preach, instead of worrying about the status quo. And how do they know that the students aren't having sex? I'm not condoning promiscuity, far from it. Are the student's privacy being invaded and is there a silent Spanish Inquisition going on?
Thanks Ting,

I agree Sebastian. It took a lot of courage for him to come out. I'm glad he did. It's interesting how these situations are being brought to light more and more in the media. I hope it will have a positive effect.
