OK well we have a few people that I know of who want to try a Book Discussion group here at the board. For those of you who havent seen that thread here is the link
http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-bhlesbianlif&msg=10376.1&ctx=0
And since there is a new month starting Monday I thought it would be a great time to start.
So those who are interested please post a few books you would like to see us read and discuss and also feel free to comment on others ideas. If we dont come to a consenus here I will put the finalists in a poll. We are going to try and choose 2 books. One for May and one for June to give people lots of time to join in.
My suggestions...
In the Lesbian genre there is Tipping the Velvet

I vote for Marley & Me, because I have read half of it already!LOL
Seriously, it's a cute book so far. Not much serious discussion can happen afterwords though - it's pretty light reading.
I'll read whatever someone else picks - that will be a nice suprise!
This is going to be fun, thanks Caly.
Sandr
My suggestion is Kindred, by Octavia E. Butler.
Pieces of My Life
THanks for the input Sandra.
That sounds Awesome Pam and I am thrilled you would like to be part of this too.
I am all for considering that one, lets see what others think.
I am leaning towards A Seahorse Year too maybe for June.
Stacey D'Erasmo's new novel, following the highly acclaimed Tea, is a powerful and beautiful book about a pivotal year in the life of a quintessentially modern family. In contemporary San Francisco, an extended family is transformed by the emerging breakdown of a troubled adolescent boy. The lives of those who love Christopher -- his mother, Nan; her lover, Marina; his gay father, Hal; and Christopher's loyal girlfriend, Tamara -- are pushed to the edge by something new in him that mystifies them all. When he runs away, far into the woods of nothern California, their assumptions about themselves and one another are sorely tested.
Have you read it?
*hugs Caly

I would also like to read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath as well as "Dance of the Dissident Daughter" by Sue Monk Kidd.
Description:
The author's journey to capture her feminine soul and to live authentically from that soul makes a fascinating, well-researched and well-written story. Kidd's successful pilgrimage from her Southern Baptist roots and away from the patriarchal and fundamentalist Christian religious systems surrounding her is an account of anger turned to courage, creativity and love. A mid-career realization that she had lived without "real inner authority" and with "a fear of dissension, confrontation, backlash, a fear of not pleasing, not living up to sanctioned models of femininity" produced in Kidd the new mindset that made her journey possible. Additionally, her extensive knowledge of many subjects, including theology, mythology and the arts, made possible the copious references and cross-references that will prove invaluable for readers who wish to follow her in this same search. While Kidd cautions that each woman's path will be unique, there is no question but that many women will find in her book a mirror of their own present conditions and a hopeful call to self-discovery.
