The subject of religion and politics came up last week in Tuesday's "Talker" post. I think it's pretty common for people to avoid talking about politics and religion in general because the subjects tend to spark debate and controversy.
I have pretty strong feelings about this issue and will share them in a response to this post. My general thinking, however, is that because of the prejudice we experience and if we ever want to change that and have equal rights, then we do have to step out on a limb sometimes and discuss these very important topics, even when it's uncomfortable.
So, I'm wondering...what are your thoughts on this? Are there any situations in which you would feel comfortable discussing politics and religion? Do you think engaging in these discussions/debates will encourage acceptance or would you rather just leave the debate up to others and hope that the tide will change in our favor eventually?
DISCLAIMER: I do not intend for this thread to start a debate, although I want everyone to share their opinions and differences...that's what this is about...getting everyone's perspectives. Just please remember to be respectful of each other.

I'm having a hard time with not pulling my hair out and shrieking at the laptop screen during those "discussions" lately lol.

Politics and religion are slightly different here in Ireland than with you guys. There is only one majority religion and that Catholisism.
Politics i could talk about all day and it would mot bother me. I'd mostly try and right the present government and talk about how they have been playing the Irish people for fools. We have no respectable public transport system in place. Our hospitals are a disgrace when compared to the likes of Spain. And the price of a house has gone to an absolute ridiculous level because of the governments lack of sight.
Religion thats a whole other ball game. I have grown to if not hate the church, have a very strong dislike for it and all it stands for. Leaving aside the abuse scandals that have been rocking this country for the last ten years. How dare an old man of seventy stand on the pulpit and tell the people that young people queing for U2 tickets is wrong and they should be in church prayig. Yeah, praying a priest hasn't abused them when they 'volunteered' to do alter boy from the age of 7 to 12. The hold the catholic church has had on Ireland is an absolute disgrace. I won't even go into the effects of it as it would put me in bad form for the day! I am spiritual in my own way but i sure as hell do not need to sit infrond of an old man for an hour a week telling me what god is going to do to me for being homosexual. Telling me i should get married and let my husband rape me at any opportunity. Telling me i should now use contraception and be kept down in a big family. MMMMhhhhhhh.
Anyway i've to get going for work, i'm on 24 hrs today.
Hope everyone left and right of me has a great day!
Love,
Olga.
