It seems our government has forgotten the very basis of what this country was form on..
..We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. ....
Perhaps some day we can make them understand that this is all we asking for..

Just as I so very quickly (though not instantly) realized exactly How much I had lost and what it feels like to be treated differently, when I came out as a lesbian and suddenly went from the accepted majority to the hated minority..
I don't think Rosa Parks thought sitting in the back of the bus, or drinking from a different fountain was right..even though it was 'better than nothing'.

What is the backlash? Maybe I’m not viewing the rhetoric going on now any differently than when LGBT communities were fighting for some human rights. Baby steps is good to ease some fears in ourselves and others but it seem a waste of some people efforts who's been fighting for their and our rights to accept small stepping stones to build a foundation for equal rights compare with heterosexual marriages. Even if there is real backlash, why not tackle that when raise it's head also. If fears can't be extinguish with smiles and compromise why not put it out with cold water. Of course I don't know if I want to be the first in line at the river to scoop up the bucket of water or the middle or last in line. *L*
Inter-racial marriage did not come about because most people wanted it, because most did not. It happened because the courts did the right thing. I suspect the same will eventually happen with equal marriage, but, not immediatly, and notunder this administration.

I don’t know if the court(s) will be on our side with the current members of the Supreme Court. I’m not so optimistic right now with Bush’s appointments. He still got two and ½ years to go and there might be two more that might be retiring via death, health reasons or on their own for him to add more individuals that might not be sympathetic to the LGBT communities.
As I've followed this thread I've been given a lot of food for thought. I'm glad that so many have posted and that some of you have pushed us to think about the big picture and the implications of legalizing just civil unions. How it all unfolds will be fascinating to watch. Will the fears be "extinguished with smiles and compromise," in the words of Eastie, or will they be put out

neither. It's just the best that's available in some states for LGBT right now. Of course, MA is different. ;-)
