Children Attending Protests

I was just looking at an online slideshow of pro/anti-gay marriage protests in Massachusetts, and there were several shots of kids holding banners (mostly anti-gay marriage)--toddlers had signs on their strollers, and a couple of older kids were shouting.
I'm having mixed feelings about this. Is it fair to involve children in activities like this that they probably can't really comprehend? I remember a guy showing off his two young children at the Terry Schivo (sp?) protest in Florida. They were against removing her feeding tube. It just didn't seem right or fair

I think sometimes children come along because of babysitting issues.
