Find a Conversation
QOTW for August 21
| Mon, 08-21-2006 - 11:16am |
So many of us have blogs now, and I enjoy reading them on a daily basis in addition to our message boards. It's nice to get a peek inside my long distance friends' lives. I think sometimes it's easier to share more in-depth information about ourselves and our lives or write in detail about a particular subject or interest more through blogs than message boards. Here on this board we hope you feel comfortable sharing parts of your life with us in addition to asking for support and advice.
With that said,
"What are your thoughts on blogs vs. message boards? How do you view their purposes?"
Have a great week!
Hugs

Message board conversations are fun, I agree! It's nice to get so many perspectives on a wide variety of topics.
That's how I view both of them too. Thanks for stopping by and replying!
Now we return you to your regularly scheduled QOTW.

Laurie who lost her signiture upgrade when she stepped down from CL and is to cheap to upgrade at this time, but will later.

I see message boards as a more convenient way to chat- than chat itself. We can still have the same sort of conversations just over a larger time frame which is great for someone like myself who lives on the other side of the world and is often sleeping while everyone else is awake and vice versa. The advantage being that the chat is preserved here on the board for all to see and add to at a later date. (very good for someone who takes two days to come up with a smart answer to something lol).
The whole blog thing, I never really got into. Ok, well I can see the point of some of them. My sister is the editor for a university newspaper. Her blog is her editorial and it allows her readers to post live comments on her editorial which she can then reply to. I have visited websites where the blog has outlined what the author hopes to do with the website- good idea if anyone was remotely interested.
Personal blogs on the other hand, are more like an online diary except with the restraints imposed by lack of privacy. I really do not enjoy the "this is what I did all day" ones because the mere fact someone is spending that much time writing in the blog already suggests they had a really boring day...
Some of the political commentary ones can be interesting- the advantage of those over a message board is of course the level of censorship. Many of the authors are very talented and often witty writers, sometimes even interesting.....
'nuff said before i get myself into trouble.... lol!!!
Blogs are online journals where you can share your thoughts and photos with other people. A couple of friends of mine use their blogs to write beautiful (short) essays and poetry about their lives. Another has a blog to delve into deeper discussion about something he wrote in his newspaper column - or to write about something that never made it into the column in the first place. Another friend and I were thinking about writing a blog about the dating scene here, from a man's and a woman's points of view. That's gone down the drain because he's now seriously dating someone lol. Perhaps because a lot of my friends are journalists or former journalists or writer or poets, the blogs are just another medium for them to write in. I love the variety of things that I find in these. It's like going on an Easter Hunt and finding little chocolate eggs here and there.
Mesageboards for me have always been a sort of online cafe where you know you can go to if you'd like to talk about certain subjects with certain people, or that can function as an online support group or an online information center. It's useful and it has specific roles. Messageboards are neutral territory, whereas blogs are definitely the territory of the person who writes them. Everyone is a peer on a messageboard, but when I read someone's blog I'm a guest at someone's house.
Thanks for posting this! A friend of mine recently asked me why I didn't just blog instead, and I wasn't very articulate in my thoughts then. I think I'll copy this and send it to him!
That's a wonderful explanation, Poppy! Couldn't have said it better myself! lol
Thanks for stopping by!
I agree, Beth! Thanks for stopping by!
I have really enjoyed getting to know so many people online and that has happened through message boards. I agree that it's nice to be able to have a chat on a board that lasts for however long we want it to.
There are some really great blogs out there, but I think it takes some wading through them all to find the really interesting ones.
