Friday night, cooledbyair and I decided to walk around the corner to the liquor store. Being a rough neighborhood, we also took her 9 y/o boxer.

We walk out the door and don't go more than three or four steps before we see this white flash - and I swear to god it was like The Matrix, where it goes in slow motion. The pitt bull came around this Suburban that was parked next to our driveway, and for the first few seconds cooled and I are dumb struck...until we realize that this dog has Strat (the boxer) by the neck.

cooled was kicking the pitt in the ribs, and all I could do was grab a news paper and start whacking away (yea, me spanking an attacking pitt bull with a news paper - real effective).

Anyway, this went on for over 5 minutes. But it seemed more like an hour. The pitt's jaws were locked on Strat's neck, and Strat was on the ground trying to get him off, pretty much defenseless after the first two minutes. I freaked after I think three minutes and realized that this dog was going to kill Strat, and started screaming for my mom, hoping she could call 911. btw, this all happened right below my mother's bedroom window, and she was so passed out drunk that she completely slept through the dog fight and our screams for help. Jeezus. Anyway...

The pitt finally let go, took a few steps back and laid down in the street, still watching us. I put my arms around Strat's neck to keep him from trying to charge the pitt and all I felt was wetness. It was dark, and I thought immediately that what I was feeling was blood and that half his neck was gone. cooled finally got her cell phone out of her pocket and 911 while I took Strat in to check him out (cooled would've passed out if there was too much blood).

Fourtunately the wetness I felt was the pitt's slobber. Strat had about 6 bite marks, a few drew blood but not too much. The officer who came out pretty much said that he would call animal control, but since no real harm was done (he did not even ask if our dog or even us had suffered any wounds), nothing else could be done. Okay, we have babies that run around these streets every day...guess one of them have to be mauled to death before they do anything.

We thought Strat was okay until we say swelling in his neck on Sunday. We took him to the vet on Monday, and by this time there was nasty discahrge coming out and he would not let us touch the area. The vet treated him for infection and he is now on anti-biotics.

Both of us pretty much gave up hope of finding this dog, since this breed is restricted and noone in the neighborhood knew of anyone who had a pitt. But today I saw this dog again. I went home for lunch and saw him being walked by a guy who took him into one of the townhouses. When cooled got home, she talked to the neighbors of that townhouse who said that the people had just moved in, and yes they had a pitt but thought they were nice people...

So, cooled and I go to this house to let the owner know what had happened before contacing animal control. The guy who answered was not the guy I saw walking the pitt, but he did admit that there was a pitt there but belonged to his roommate who was not there at the time. He did not act suprised in the least bit when we told him what had happened. That's scary. Co-workers and friends have told me that the pitt's actions of attacking and then immediately laying down are signs of a dog trained to fight...this dog lives in a neighborhood where many small children and small-breed dogs and cats are, and the owners KNOW he is like this???

beth wrote this and I copied and pasted .I am lazy and on the way out the door....hope everyone is well...Jo

Well, Beth I'm glad that you and Jo weren't hurt and that Strat is semi-ok too. Even though I don't want to see anything happen to the life of another creature, but that pitt dog should be put down.

Thanks for the update, and it good to see the both of you.

Hugs to Beth, handshake to Jo.

Sebastian

Oh wow! That is so scary. I'm glad Strat is getting treatment. It's sad that you can't go out of your house without being on the look-out.

Hugs

Awwww, poor Strat. I would have been screaming too and crying.
People around here leave thier dogs run off too. We are afraid to walk our dogs around here for fear of what happened to Strat. We go to the park where they have to be on a leash and thankfully we have a fenced in yard.
I hope the neighbors will keep that dog on a leash but if not, from now on carry some pepper spray or a spray called Direct Stop for attacking dogs. We but it at Pet Smart. It stops them cold but is not harmfull. We had to use it on a couple of our own dogs who got into a terrible fight. It is citronella. Spray ir right into the face. Keep it handy when your dogs are out. I think I would use that or pepper spray for the Pitt bull.
Take care,
hugs to you both and Strat,
Laurie

ugh that is very scarey and I am glad Strat will be ok. Boxers don't often live til 9 so he must be in fine form to recover from that!!

My boss told me a story about being at a puppy class run at a vet clinic. The woman who ran the class owned two french mastiffs. They were ony a year old. The woman got one out of the car to show my boss and his wife. The entire male mastiff slipped through the hands of his owner and attacked a labrador puppy at the obedience class. The Vet ran out and tried to pull the dog off, John (my boss) had him by the back legs and tried to pull him off, the dogs owner was also trying to pull him off... the puppy owner very distraught and screaming. The mastiff was so strong that the 3 of them pulled and pried, kicked him, twisted him.. nothing they did could make him let go of the poor puppy.
Then suddenly... without warning he spat it out. Everyone was more concerned with the welfare of the puppy (who survived the attack and sometimes boards with us) and it was only later (while John was washing his hands for the fifth or sixth time) that the vet commented on how odd it was that the dog spat the puppy out like that.
John knew exactly what had happened. While he was pulling on the dogs hind quarters, he had a good view of it's backside. His brother had worked with Pit bulls over in Australia. He had mentioned at some stage that the only way to distract an attacking dog like that was to insert a finger into it's anus. John thought... it's for the puppy! Apparently it works...! The mastiff didnt gradually loosen it's grip- just spat the puppy out.
The mastiff was put to sleep on that day.

btw boxers are my favourite dogs. My profile pic is of me at work with a 7 month old boxer puppy. Give your boy a hug for me!
