Good Morning!

Let me start off by thanking Soozi for the idea for this week's question. ((((((Tookie)))))

Reading her post about supporting the businesses that support us made me think.

"Would you give up shopping at your FAVORITE store (that had the best prices too) if it really would help the GBLT community secure equal rights?

HECK YEAH!!

Of course, you are reading a post from a person who wouldn't accept a diamond ring until apartheid was ended in South Africa.

I think any contribution makes a difference even if the outcome is not what you initially wanted.

Would I give up shopping at my favorite store? Well, I want to expand that question for a minute. I would give up what didn’t negatively financially affect me. There is no need for me to shoot myself in the foot or anyone else to do so either. I do part-time contract work that requires me to have certain tools to perform my job. If those tools I needed were exclusive, then I would have to purchase them and not look for a different one via another manufacturer. I could change the vendor but I couldn’t change the particular exclusive tool. In my case, this is true. My line of work requires specific exclusive tools.

In the case of choosing one retailer over the other, that might not have a huge impact on me, so I would opt for the gay friendly retailer and make the change. A perfect example is one that was given about Nissan. I am not going to test drive or buy a Nissan now unless they change their policies. I don’t have to buy a Nissan because there are plenty of automakers to choose from with competitive pricing and auto packages.

Another local example I’ll share is one of a gay church. For some reason, the gay church was promoting and holding a class surrounding a spiritual/self help book. This book was written by an author who denounces homosexuality. I don’t understand this approach. Why would a gay church want to encourage its members to spend their money on a book written by an author who denounces who they are? I don’t know but I think that is a bad idea. You can find self help through positive thinking and there are plenty other books out there to choose from. (this was a true story)

Anyway, as I mentioned in my first sentence, one person can make an impact. If you decide to spend your money at another retailer, then your money isn’t going to the retailer you left. This might not make the nightly news, but it does have an impact. Mr. Hershey became wealthy from selling nickel candy bars. Every cent does count. And by the way, I’ve not checked to see if Hershey’s is on the list. LOL

I’m just thankful that Apple is on the good list because they don’t call me “Mac” dreamy for nothing. ;)

Yes I would stop shopping. I do that now with the gas prices. I refuse to go in and shop the convenience stores.

I don't know if many will remember a woman named Anita Bryant. She was the spokeswoman for an orange juice company,(help me out ginny). She spoke out against gays and there was a big boycott until the company got rid of her. We need to do this today. What if all gays went on strike for a week? What would happen then? Bottom line, is I'm all for boycotting. Hit them in their pocket books and see how they turn around!

I love your "Break the Chains" motto. I shop at many of them, but really prefer local businesses. Unfortunately, those are hard to find in our town, which is very suburban.
