Even thought professional athletes are human beings and they have many flaws and sometimes engage in illegal behavior, and sometimes show their childish sides, I think that all of them deserve every dollar that they get.
They have a talent that everyone admires, it doesn't matter what sport that they play. Even though many women athletes aren't paid as much as the guys (and they should be), I do believe that they are just as devoted to their sport as well.
I could list all of the famous women athletes that have made very strong marks in the world of sports, but I'm not. I do admire a lot of women sports pioneers, and when I was in high school, some of them were my inspiration. They showed me how to be devoted to my teammates and still play fair, and have a love for the game.
Lou found it on the tv for me, I didn't realize it was Superbowl Sunday!
And only though we only got to watch the first quarter, at one point the commentator mentioned a player who'd been 'released' to make the game. We looked at eachother and sighed for whatever message, if any, had just been given to our youth.
"How do you feel about the role Professional Sports plays in our society?"
I think atheletes are so over paid it is not funny where as the real heroes(cops, teachers, firemen) don't make squat...they risk there lives for alot less.... they are the real heroes to me not some guy who can dribble a basketball... sports are games ,who gets 8 million to play the game they love,lol....... and I think sports put to much pressure onkids...I mean if sports are fun and played as they should be great ....but what about the pressure that little willy is to small and not good...no one picks him for there team or he gets picked last and is runined for life over it....the world I think is way to caught on beauty ,power ,money and who does the best at everything and well personally I think that puts way to much pressure on the kids ......just my thoughts ....
I do think that sports, and other forms of entertainment are vital, especially at times like these, when the people of the world are under immense pressure. It is a form of release, of relaxation, and it can be a good way of learning sportsmanship.
There are, however, many things that detract from this. Here in Europe, football (that's soccer to you guys) hooligans are creating violence for violence's sake, in the name of sport. People are actually KILLED because they support one team or another! It costs the police millions of dollars, pounds, whatever currency you're working in, to police the GAMES, and ensure that things don't get out of hand. Money that could-and should, be spent preventing real crime in our streets!
The top players are paid ridiculous amounts of money. Yes, their sporting lives are short, but it's not like they don't have any options after that, and to be paid millions of pounds each year is just not healthy. Of course they're providing a service, but many of them seem to forget that, as we see increasing levels of violence and aggravation on our pitches as well as off them. Sportsmen are being arrested for rape, murder, assault. They are supposed to be something that our children can look up to, but what are these children learning? That it's ok to break the law as long as you're a famous football player, or boxer, or whatever? And there are people out there who are doing far more important jobs, saving lives, working 10, 12, 14 hour days, and not even able to afford a home in the same city that they work in. Our firemen, nurses, and hundreds of other workers end up having to live miles and miles away from where they work, adding hours of travel to their workdays (nurses here work 12 hour shifts, and if they work in London they have a minimum 1 hour journey each way, usually more, on the London tube or busses, which close, aren't safe and don't run 24 hours).
No, to me, the sports idea has gone over the top. It concerns me when what some sportsman or woman (or the wife or husband of one) has done is top news, and world news comes below that. Apparently, now, one of the NFL games is going to come to London. In an age where we're trying to encourage a reduction in air travel for our environment's sake, we're going to fly over BOTH teams, with cheerleaders, fans, etc, to London for a game. How exactly is this sensible?
I love sports (though I prefer horse related to others) but it's just all so OTT.

And all of this is purely my opinion, of course!

Overpaid, spoiled, too much attention. Professional sports are played up to the expense of things of value like education
