Hey again Brenda!

Now that I have a little time, I will try to share my thoughts, though I am sure this will be a great topic for around the campfire when we go camping this month. *smile

Anyway, Jordan was a bit older when I came out and I wasn't yet living with Kirche, so its a little different, but what I did, was to begin to make references to homosexuality in general and talk about his feelings and perceptions of that.

Children can be so mean....Mine are now 18 and 20. One of the biggest things that helped me was teaching them about diversity. I never focused on gay people, just all people in general. The children in school that tease her, are just looking to get under her skin. All children are that way. As time goes on, her friends will support her and put them in their place. In the schools, you can't stop progress. The kids think it is cool and soon she will be popular because of this. As she gets older, they will be approaching her for advice about all kinds of things.

I would just reassure her that these children need to learn more about diversity. Give her extra hugs, but, I wouldn't make such a big issue out of it in front of her. The more normal you treat it, the less likely she is going to go back to school and look for it. Help her understand that people like that will go away if you just ignore them. Have her hang around her friends in the halls more to avoid the kids teasing her. As they grow older their views will change too. My children never got teased about me. My house is full of teenagers and they all are very accepting. Good luck with it all!
