I actually met my first girlfriend online. Neither of us were looking for love. We both belonged to a listserv for writers. Members would submit short stories for review by the group. I mostly just lurked because I was busy with work and school, but one story really touched me and I couldn't stop thinking about. So I wrote the author and gushed about it -- I gave really detailed feedback about why I liked it. She wrote back immediately to thank me and said my email stood out because although she got a lot of positive feedback, most of it was vague...along the lines of "great story!" or "keep writing!" and she really appreciated my explanation of what exactly worked and why.
After that we chatted back and forth for months, first just about writing, then about our personal lives. After awhile, the friendship blossomed into an attraction. Unfortunately, we were on different continents, so it wasn't exactly easy! We "dated" long distane for about a year before she was able to come to the US for two months and stay with me during that time. It was wonderful, but because of the circumstances, we knew our relationship couldn't progress, so we focused mainly on the friendship/emotional aspect. It was actually the perfect first relationship for me, I think. She and I remain friends, though we don't talk very often anymore.
After that, I dated a handful of girls, but never any that got serious. I met them in a variety of ways -- through friends, at gay/lesbian fundraisers, etc. But ironically, my only other long-term relationship (my current girlfriend) online as well. Again, I wasn't looking for love. I have a myspace profile which I never update or check unless I get a message from my younger siblings who all use it frequently. When I got a private message, I thought it was one of them. But it was a cute girl telling me how adorable my puppy was, and asking what kind of dog he was. I replied and there were instant sparks. We chatted via AIM over the next week, progressed to the phone for a week after that, then met in person. Once we met in person, we were both head over heels and the rest is history. :)
Caly and I met online too - on this board, in fact! I don't think it would have happened otherwise. It just all fell into place once we started emailing and talking to each other on the phone. There were a couple of threads that played a significant role in bringing us together, and here we are, happy as ever!
I'm sure you will find your sweetheart! Don't give up hope. It will happen when you least expect it.
Hugs
Hi Annie,
I wanted to sidetrack here and say hello.... my partner and I also live here in GA in Gainesville...

Wow, it must have been pretty amazing to suddenly just see her in a new light. What kind of shop do you have?
It's great to meet some other GA folks. We're right in downtown Atlanta -- the Virginia Highlands. We lucked into a really great little apartment that is the bottom part of a house. The neighborhood is fantastic and we can walk to just about everything.
We had friends in common.
Ugg.. I couldn't imagine being right in downtown.. lol... but I have heard that once you live there it is great, I have always lived North of Atlanta....and drove in...

I LOVE living right downtown. I love the diversity of people and opportunities. I love how close everything is -- I'm five minutes from work and I can walk to dozens of restaurants, bars, shops, cafes, etc. It's so convenient. I love being five minutes from the High, Fernbank, the Fox and Turner Stadium. And the traffic in our area is no worse than traffic in any suburb. I wouldn't want to commute across the city, but when you are so close to everything, it's incredibly easy. Any minor inconveniences are made up for ten times over by all the things I love about the city.
Jamie grew up in one of the very ritzy northern suburbs and was very reluctant to move to the city at first, but now she loves it. We're currently locking horns (gently ) on where we'll live once we have kids. I'd rather stay in the city and raise kids in the highlands or morningside. I want to spend my days with them at the aquarium, the zoo, the museums, and Piedmont Park. Jamie would rather return to Cobb county. Most likely I'll be the one to give in, because I think she has some really valid reasons for wanting to move back up that way. But I love this area and can't bear to think of leaving it yet. Luckily we have a couple of years left to enjoy it since we're not planning to start TTC for probably three years. And we may compromise by staying in the city while our kids are little but relocating when they are school-aged.
