I'm pretty much in agreement with all the other posts so far.. I have no problem with labels if people are using them for descriptive type measures ..in perhaps a
I agree about the label fitting part of who you are, not all of who you are. Yeah, I identify as a lesbian, but I don't think to myself every day "I'm a lesbian," just like I don't mentally think about being a mom or daughter. It is what it is.
The Atlanta pride event includes a Dyke March too. The use of that word in that case doesn't offend me. But, I've never really cared for it in a general sense, just like I don't care for the label "fag". Just me, I guess.
We're all different in so many ways, aren't we? I think if a very diverse group of lesbians gathered in a room with a bunch of homophobes, we'd totally throw them for a loop and negate all of their stereotypes. ;-)
Lol I get on early in the day because I post from work! Interesting point you make bluediamond. I find it's not useful to think it's ok to define ourselves in a derogatory way. Why perpetuate our own stereotypes? You have a lot of very good perspectives. Glad you're here!
Glad you're enjoying all our topics, sweets. And we're happy you're here! I think Toronto would be a great place to live. I'm sure you've seen the movie "Better Than Chocolate". It's one of my favorites! Is Christina Cox a big star in Toronto? I think she's an awesome actress.
Yahoooo! So this is what the middle of the day is like! I only had a half day and now I am off for spring break!!!!!!! I would NEVER post from work. Big Brother is watching.
I am glad this discussion is still progressing. It is very insightful. It's also interesting the way language is a living thing and sometimes BANG a new word appears and then sometimes it takes decades to change meaning for words. Just look at the words that have been used: gay, fag, queer. They have all been something else. I'm for creating new, positive words.

I totally agree...it turns my stomach when I hear labels being used in a derogatory manner.

LOL on your question, "What is your descriptive label?" Seriously, you make a very good point.
