Sometimes equality sucks!

I have a bit of a vent, so just bear with me. Shelley and I are registered domestic partners and we are very thankful that we are able to have this legal protection and recognition of our relationship. However, this is the first year that this state is requiring info on both incomes in regards to fee waivers for college tuition. We've both have always had our tuition waived because we've only had to report our own income, not the others. Now, we have to report our spouses income. Which means starting this fall neither of us will be eligable. We make good livings, but this does make it more difficult to go to school for both of us. This will be especially difficult when I start my program in January, my first semester alone is 18 credit hours. I'm so bummed!

Sorry to hear about this, Shannon. Like Caly said, though, maybe there is some sort of financial aid that you would still qualify for. Hope you can work it out, or if not, that the regular tuition won't be too much of a burden.
Thanks ladies! I'm just frustrated I guess. I know it's "fair" but it also came out of no where. I was under the impression that this was not going to occur for another year because in this state we don't have to start doing joint taxes until next year. As far as other financial aid, I can get student loans if I want but that is it. We make too much money to qualify for anything else. What also makes it hard is that when I start the respiratory therapy program in January I will probably have to reduce my hours at work. At that point I would qualify for more, but won't be able to get anything until the Summer 08 semester. The application I did yesterday is good until July 2008, so I'll be earning less but still paying more. It makes it less feasible for me to drop my hours which in turn makes school harder. I'll be in school 20+ hours a week, working 30+ hours a week and needing to study about 15 hours a week. I'm done complaining, I just feel overwhelmed these days!
If we had "equal" rights at the Federal and state level I would have no problem with any of this! A girl can dream right? I think we'll see that in my lifetime.
