hey, welcome to the board. *smile*
we like different opinions. At least we know it's there.
You're right, L-Word started out going for the straight women/lesbian crowds but that did not bring in the advertisers too much so they did branch out to the male viewers afterward. Not exclusively but concerted efforts was made to the male viewers.
Are you The View watcher from the beginning?
Do you watch the show more or less since Rosie came on?
Do you think you will turn in more with her gone?
Do you think Elizebeth H will turn back to pre-Rosie participation mode when Rosie gone?
I think EH will feel the biggest lost when she's gone. I haven't seen EH participate this much before Rosie came on board.
Rosie is pursuing the subject on her blog. *grin*
Check it out. RosieO.com
I don't think that any of these stars have a right to say whatever they want just because they are stars.

I look at it differently. Nobody have the right to say because of their occupation. They just have the right to say whatever because we are a free country. *grin*
I really don't think there is a huge portrayal of butches in tv and movies. Most of the movies I have seen have had femme and/or soft butches in them. Maybe I'm off base here, but I'm thinking of the following:
Lost and Delirious
Imagine Me and You
Better Than Chocolate
Desert Hearts
Aimee and Jaguar
But I'm A Cheerleader
Bound
If These Walls Could Talk II
The L Word
I know I've seen others but can't remember all the titles. These are all great movies, BTW! The thing I have appreciated about these movies too is that they portray deep emotional connections between the women involved. I think the portrayals of love are true and real.
Maybe what needs to happen is that "more" butches should be included in the media. I do appreciate that more gay couples are being included in tv shows. Last night there was a couple in "Grey's Anatomy". "House" has had a lesbian couple, and there are a couple of other ones with regular gay cast members (the assistant on "Ugly Betty" comes to mind).
So, I think we're making progress in getting ourselves out there in the media. So far from what I've seen the portrayals have not been too off base, if at all.
Well, I have pondered over this thread for awhile. I agree with what you are saying, although I have only seen two of the movies. The emotional connections are what is so powerful.
I don't think we will see many butches any time soon in the mainstream, because I don't think that men are particularly entranced with that segment of our population, and like it or not, they control a large part of the purse. Please don't think those are my thoughts. I am trying to look at this clinically. They are only going to put on TV (movies may be another story) what sells advertisement slots. Perhaps as more women direct and produce, the scenery will change. Even when Oprah had her show about lesbians, the hook for it was "The secret lives of lesbian wives" and the two women that were chosen were not average, everyday women.
It reminds me of back in the day when there weren't any African Americans on TV. Then one show came on, I think it was called Julia or Juliet (help me out, folks). Then there was the famous kiss on Star Trek. Pretty soon there were commercials, then people started having one African American on their show (sort of like now with Brothers and Sisters, House, etc.for gays). The more we are portrayed as the normal people we are, the easier it's going to get, both on the screens and in real life.
Now, my children would be appalled to think that an almost all white TV was all there was. They just couldn't fathom it, because it's not in their culture. Perhaps their children will think the same about our little part of the American landscape. If I could just get my students to stop saying "That's so gay."
Hugs to all

Good take Blue.

Hi and thanks for the welcome.
I haven't ever watched The View. So for that reason I cannot properly answer your questions. I saw all the coverage about The View and Rosie on the cable news shows such as Glenn Beck, Anderson Cooper 360, On the Record with Greta, Scarborough Country, and The O'Reilly Factor. I don't watch the O'Reilly Factor as much only when I'm at home doing a workout. The show seems to blend well with a workout.
I knew that Rosie had a blog and was posting about the conspiracy theory because it was mentioned on the news shows. I don't visit her blog though because her views do not interest me.
Take care.
Great input Blue!
It has been an interesting progression hasn't it, in terms of how often and how we are portrayed on television and in the movies isn't it.
Hi Halo!
Awesome post!
