so recentley i have been thinking about long long term with my relationship and the idea of marriage comes to mind. i live in new jersey and could when ready have a civil union. but what are the legal rights that come and dont come with that? is it the same as marriage and if not whats the difference? also would i be able to change my last name to hers with this?

Welcome to the board! Congratulations on the possibility of a civil union! You are lucky to live in such an open state. I'm in TN, so I'm not familiar with civil unions. You might try doing some research on the net. I did a quick search and came up with this site that appears to have a lot of information: http://writ.news.findlaw.com/grossman/20040113.html
Hi and welcome!
I came from VT orginally where civil unions have been legal since 2001 and yes in the eyes of the state they give you all the rights and priviledges of marriage within that state,
