Last week when we were discussing reading material, Blue mentioned Lesbian Music and at first I was confused, bigthink.gif until I realized she was talking about music sung by lesbians.

Well, I really don't know if any of the women musicians I listen to are gay, or not - however, a good friend of mine is into ANY female musician who is gay...lol.
She holds very small "concerts" in her home. She calls it "Bringing Indie Music Home." It's been very successful, providing a showcase for up & coming independent artists, as well as giving them a place to stay (for free), for the night!
She's worked with Melissa Ferrick, Garrison Starr, Edie Carey, to name a few, & her girlfriend is Andrea Paquin. I really don't know much about these women, but perhaps some of you do.

P.S. Oh, I might add...I wish Sheryl Crow was gay. ; )

Caly, I had a similar experience with my daughter! She's all about singing Come to My Window and I'm The Only One a few years ago. I am listening to this for about a month when I ask her if she knows that ME is a lesbian. I think she might have been a senior in high school or a freshman in college. She acts all like she knows and I KNOW she didn't. For awhile she stops with the songs and then she tells me she doesn't really care. Gotta love that kid.

So I come out last November to one of my Bi collegues who lived with her partner for four years who was strictly lesbian. An unusual realationship. Anyhow, she is the one who makes the "lesbian music" comment to me. I had no idea there was such a thing. She talks about the music that she says she "had" to listen to and all the political stuff that was going on with the lesbians she knew. I start my own research into the music and start buying tons of CDs by lesbian or Bi artists.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! lol

I've seen the two Melissa's, Ferrick thrice, including at smiely's b day party. Have also seen the Indigo Girls, who put on an absolutely superb show.

I'd like to get Beth Orton across the het/homo line... alas...

A blog post written last week...

In the year of '89... or was it '91?

It was a world I'd never before been witness to, after all I am notorious for being locked in my myopic little world. I'm not really sure what year it was... perhaps it was 1988, or 1991, or 1989... I really don't know, nor is it really important. Could be anwhere around that time.

I was in my car, a 1987 Toyota 4Runner. My ex was making a quick run into a store. We were in Nashua, some 20 miles to the south of here, a state border city best known for luring Massachusetts residents northward to sales tax-free shopping. As I boringly awaited her return, my fingers reached out and fumbled with the radio, manually scoping out stations that might prove to have something different and entertaining.

What exactly was different, in terms of search results my mind was looking for? And why did I need different? Who knows? Different.

A college station came on - yanno.... those that broadast below 92 on the FM dial? Non-profit radio. A woman was singing folkishly, and looking back from this time, almost 20 years hence, I know not who she might have been or rather, was. Is she... is she singing about a lover? A woman lover?

Like the Martian in My Favourite Martian, immediately and unwittingly my antennae deployed, the listening got just a little more intent, a little more involved. Another song... ok, there is a theme here, a realisation that the programme had not randomly aired the first song. A gay theme. And indeed, that is exactly what it was... the University of Lowell radio station had a gay themed radio programme. It no longer exists, and I did not think much about it then, for my ex returned and the station was changed.

But I do think back on it now. It was a brief moment in time, perhaps 15 or 20 minutes. It would be years before the walls I'd erected in my mind began to shake and crumble. At that point in time, my roots were deep in my self created closet, and there was little inkling I'd one day brave the opening of the door, never mind step through and blow the closet all to hell.

It was a minor incident, one that might not mean anything now had the closet remained stronger than my inner self. But now... it points to this hidden yearning, this hidden understanding... that my community lie in waiting, and that it would one day call and embrace me.

If only I knew who that artist was.

To add this list, I listen to several lesbian singers. Ashland Miller who has the voice of an Angel, @ Ashlandmiller.com, Andy Moore, Mandy Shaw, Laura Cerulli, a band called Sonya and Disappear Fear? the name will come later. All are super ladies with great voices and rhythm!

Thank you...

Are ya saying you would rather have seen Melissa? ;-)

I listen to the Lowell station every now and then, as well as Emerson College radio in Boston... Emerson has a folk show mornings that is worth listening to. You can access over the internet.

One I forgot to mention is from your neck of the woods... Cheryl Wheeler, an excellent dyke musician and story teller.

I listen to music that I enjoy. I don't base my music selection on the sexual orientation of the musician. I am not really familiar with lesbian musicians either. I know of Melissa Etheridge and KD Lang. That's about it. I bought one album of Melissa's back in 95. But, overall I stick to getting music from online now instead of buying albums. I find it hard to like all the songs on any one single musician or band's album. I do my own mixes and burn a CD or put it on my iPod.

Have a great weekend!

What a great idea your friend had! I will have to look up some of those names. The only one I'm familiar with is Melissa Ferrick.
