Last week when we were discussing reading material, Blue mentioned Lesbian Music and at first I was confused, bigthink.gif until I realized she was talking about music sung by lesbians.

To me, lesbian music is sort of like lesbian movies. I know the big names (Melissa E., Melissa Ferrick, Indigo Girls, etc.), but others seem hidden. Hmmm...this has me thinking, though...what about gay male music? Aside from Elton John, Culture Club, and one other guy whose name escapes me, I can't think of any other gay male artists. I'm sure some are in the mainstream, but I've been clueless about them!

What a great blog post, Nelle! It's really amazing how seemingly insignificant moments like those can have such a huge impact on our lives.

I love Beth Orton, BTW! I stumbled on her one day while noodling around on Lycos Rhapsody. Great stuff!

More names for me to research! Keep 'em comin'! You've talked about Ashland Miller before. She must be great!

I'm pretty much the same way, chmod. I do enjoy the lyrics of some lesbian musicians, though. Often, they are very related to experiences/feelings I've had myself. Many of Melissa Etheridge's songs hit close to home.

I hardly ever buy CDs anymore. I love to burn mixed CDs.

I tend to be all over the place when it comes to music. I love ALL kinds. Right now I'm enjoying Latin music and just made a CD with some Lou Bega tunes on it.

Regarding lesbian music, though, I'm familiar with the well-known artists. I've seen the Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge in concert. The Indigo Girls were fantastic! They were unassuming, and the environment was totally casual - no glitzy set or fancy lighting. The only thing out of the ordinary was that they burned incense. It was all about the music, and the tickets were worth every cent I spent on them. Melissa E. was awesome too.

One other name I'll throw into the mix is M'Shell Ndegeocello. I'm not crazy about all of her stuff but

Yeah, that other guy, he's reatively new and I, too, can't remember his name. Type in "that gay guy who's name I can't remember" and see what happens!! lol

I have liked the Indigo Girls for a while. I don' know why I didn't realize I was gay when I felt I could relate to their songs more than any one else's. LOL. The other guy group that I think you are talking about that are gay were a band called Savage Gardens. I also like some of Ani Difranco I think she is bi. And of course Melissa Ethridge. Don't get me wrong there is a lot of non gay and lesbian musicians that I like but when it comes to love songs listening to straight artist doesn't work for me.

I've seen Melissa 3 times, but the version of Drive she did in Madison, WI was simply superb. And I'll leave it at that ;-)

I see much more than's good for me

The last place I look each time
