I have a couple of questions for all the exercisers/fitness gurus on the board. I have been working out with weights a few times a week. Normally I use 5 pd. dumbbells for my arms. As you know, Blue, I carry my weight in my upper body.

Hey CAT,

You asked some really great questions. I usually shy away from giving advice about working out and diet. But I see that no one has replied to you yet. And we can't let the CAT WOMAN go without an answer. :) So, I'm going to tell you what I know.

White carbs I believe are also referred to as simple carbs. I like to refer to them as simple because it helps you remember that they don't last. When the body has to work to break something down, it lasts longer and that is always better. Complex carbs on the other hand don't break down as quickly. Some examples of complex carbs are oatmeal, brown rice, multi-grain bread, broccoli, etc. Some examples of simple carbs are table sugar, candy, white flour, etc.

I personally do not focus on carbs. But, some people do. I focus on calorie intake. I try and keep it simple. I don't focus on fat as much because usually high calories go hand in hand with high fat. But, be aware that some packaged low fat sweets can contain high calories and low fat. There are exceptions to any rule. And, with fats be careful with your family history. Know your family medical history it will help you in planning your health/exercise regimen.

Everyone is different. That's why I shy away from giving advice. Right now, I listen to my body. I don't count calories. I may glance to see what calorie content is in something but I don't tally my daily intake. My body tells me when I'm hungry.

I will have to disagree with the notion that you cannot eat at night. I often have a bedtime snack and I'm in great shape. I think it is more about how many calories you have taken in that day and what you are snacking on before bed. If you are eating a three course meal before bed then that is going to eventually put weight on you. But, if you are having a slice of toast, fruit, or something light, I see nothing wrong with that as long as you are not exceeding your calorie intake for the day.

I know that I keep on mentioning calorie intake. I don't count calories - I just listen to my body. There may come a day when I'll have to count calories but right now what I'm doing works for me. And that is what you'll have to do is find out what works for you. Look at all the wealth of information online about diet and exercise and pull out bits and pieces that will work for you. Because, trust me - what works for one person might not work for you.

As for vitamins, I visit Dr Weil online. He has a vitamin advisor questionaire you can fill out. Of course, he'll want you to purchase vitamins from his online store but you don't have to. He also has some other great interesting stuff. Check it out when you are able:
www.drweil.com/

I take Super B Complex, Magnesium, and St. John's Wort for my anxiety. This something I have just started and am testing to see how it does.

If you begin exercising, start slow and don't set hard to meet goals. Try and keep a schedule of something light and short in time. See how you feel after a couple of weeks and increase as you become more confident.

I don't brag about working out. I don't workout to feel cool. I workout for my health both physical and mental. Working out is a part of my lifestyle. Don't let those who like to brag make you feel uneasy about working out. Working out is like everything else, we all started out new and learned what was right for us.

Well, I feel like I've typed a book here. So, I'll close.

Hugs!

Lots of good thoughts, chmod! I've realized that sometimes I *need* a snack before bed - something light like you said. I usually don't eat breakfast until around 9 a.m. So, if I don't eat past 7 p.m., I wake up starving. The key for me is keeping my snack simple and low cal.

Well said.
I agree with the calorie thing. I tell my kids at school that it is all about the calories. I know how Atkins and South Beach work because of the way we burn the calories we consume, but ulitmately it is: fuel in-fuel out. Proteins and carbs give you 4 calories per gram and fat gives you 9 calories per gram.

I work out because it makes me feel good and makes me healthy. I completely agree with starting slow and easy, setting goals that are attainable with better than average work. Good healthis bound to follow.

Absolutely, working out is a lifestyle choice.
