I have a couple of questions for all the exercisers/fitness gurus on the board. I have been working out with weights a few times a week. Normally I use 5 pd. dumbbells for my arms. As you know, Blue, I carry my weight in my upper body.

You are simply awesome! Good job. Hope you feel like walking tomorrow, because that is the key!. The next thing I want you to do is to find your Target Heart Rate. This goes for everybody out there. If you belong to a gym, it is probably up on the wall somewhere on a chart. If not, here's what you do:

Take your age and subtract it from 220. Then take that number and multiply it by .65. Take the subtracted number again and multiply it by .85. The two numbers that you get give you the range that your heart rate should be during exercise. The closer you are to the lower number, the more you are working for health fitness. The closer you are to the higher number, the more you are working at an athlete's pace. To start you should be doing this three times a week for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. I have found that at my age, I must work closer to the upper range to lose or maintain weight. However, please, please work at what feels comfortable for you. Longevity is the key to any exercise/nutrition program. If you make yourself miserable and can't or won't continue, all is lost.

Now, how will you know whether you have reached and maintained the target rate?? Silly people! Take your pulse. I recommend that you take it for 30 seconds and multiply by two. You can take your radial pulse(in the wrist) or your carotid pulse(in the neck). Either is FINE. Take it as soon as you stop exercising. Did you reach target? Yes--awesome! If not, start working a little harder next time to bring it up.

Good luck to all!!

Anyhow, woman, good job, and keep up the good work.

Hey Blue!

Thanks for the info and encouragement, I really do appreciate it! Last year I was a walking champ, I did it 4-5 days a week! Then I had 2 really tough semesters at school and fell back into my lazy ways. My weight loss has pretty much been at a stand still for a year and a half! It's time to get back on track, it's not going to get any easier as I get older!

I've actually signed up for a walk/jog class at school for the fall semester. It's August-December 2 days a week, 90 minutes each day! I've heard awesome things about the instructor so I'm super psyched. There is a circuit training for beginners class that I'm thinking about signing up for. It's 2 days per week 90 minutes each day. I haven't decided yet though........any thoughts?

Is the circuit training for weights or cardio?

That would give you four days of controlled working out. That would be great, since going to a class makes you more committed than doing it on your own. People EXPECT to see you, so there's no dodging out. There's one other suggestion I am going to make. Get yourself a cheap pedometer. 10,000 steps a day is what is recommended. They are highly motivational. I don't search for the closest parking space anymore, walk instead of riding when I can. You will find ways of your own to get more steps in. Don't worry if it doesn't seem all that accurate. It's for you...not for the little machine! Wear it for class and all day long. We all got one at work and kept track of our steps. As a staff, we walked across the US and back twice, before the year ended and we started in December. That was motivational, also. My staff lost a ton of pounds, became more fit, and felt better about themselves. However, not everybody participated, and that's okay, too

If it is circuit training for cardio, everything I read tells me that is a great idea. It keeps your body guessing and is good for variety. Before I started uping my time recently, I was altering my workouts to making at least one or two per week a slow/fast workout, sort of circuit training. I just can't give up the length of time to put in a sprint day. Maybe I should make that circuit part of my afternoon workout, once I get settled.

Anyhow,I'll see you tomorrow morning on the road. I'll be the one in the Tai Chi t-shirt with the sleeves cut out and the neck cut into a V. lol

The circuit training is weights, which is slightly intimidating for me. I seriously have zero solid muscle on this body. When Shelley and I first started dating I lost 40 pounds pretty fast. She was suprised that under all that fat was just more fat and a really soft body, I have no muscle tone at all.

This is the course description:

This course presents the student with a system of exercising with weights that provides a balanced approach to physical fitness training. There will be an emphasis on increasing strength, muscle endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility while decreasing body fat.

The walking class is in the morning and this class is in the evening, so it would be 2 exercise classes a week on the same days........does that make a differance?

I do have a pedometer, I need to start wearing it again. I was wearing it at work to see how many steps a day I took........usually around 7,000 in a 12 hour work day.

I'll be on the look out for an athletic looking woman in a Tai Chi t shirt........I'll be the bum in black capri yoga pants, white t shirt and blue LL Bean baseball cap!

Shannon,
Take the class if you can. I am not sure of your tolerance for a lot of exercise in one day. If you are okay the next morning, I say you kick butt. You will be amazed at how good you will feel after the classes are over and the changes that will happen. I don't believe that 40lb. crap you laid on me at the beginning of your post. I'm not gonna soft peddle anything. You have got to do the work, but I have the utmost confidence in you. Along with a new look, we gotta get you a new attitude.

I'm not sure how athletic looking I am. I'm gettin' older and I am fighting it, but the sun and gravity show no mercy. lol I don't have the money for anything cosmetic and wouldn't spend it on that if I did. I'd rather travel.

Sign up, get your butt in gear, and get out there, sistah!

40 pound crap? You mean the having no muscle tone? I'm sure I have muscle somewhere.....it's just hidden! I am my worst critic always, I acknowledge that 100%.....no one in this world has ever been as hard on me as I am on myself. But, I do give myself credit for the progress that I've made so far. As far as the class goes, I just went online and enrolled. So, here is my new and improved fall schedule, minus an online class I'm taking

Tues/Thurs 9am-10:30am Body Fitness,Walk/Jog
Tues/Thurs 12:00-4:30pm Anatomy and Physiology Lecture and Lab
Tues/Thurs 5pm-6:30pm Circuit Weight Training

Schedule looks awesome. I loved Anatomy and Physiology. One of my favorite classes of all time. I teach the watered down version to my classes every year.
I also remember that Friday was lab day. I went to a suitcase college, so the night out for partying was Thursday night. I would come in all draggy-butt on Friday, and then I would volunteer to be the guinea pig for the experiments. My group loved me for that. The worst was the day we did an experiment on oxygen uptake. I thought they were going to kill me! lol

Now, I don't want you to get the idea that I am or was a huge party animal. Let's just say that I had a good time once in awhile.

Honey, by the end of these classes you will be well on your way to the new, muscle toned you. Remember it does not happen over night, however. Ya gotta stick it out. I will walk the whole walk with you, don't worry.

Hugs
