The Boyfriend
Find a Conversation

DD and I are heading into Boulder to do some shopping at the cute shops on Pearl Street when a Prius passes us. My dd says that B, the boyfriend, calls them "fag" cars. I want to know why. She says that a lot of gay guys drive them and that is what he calls them. Wow, I am blown away. After a couple of hours shopping over lunch, I ask if B is homophobic. She says that he has had some "bad" experiences in the past, but as long as "they" leave him alone and don't try to espouse their beliefs, he's okay with "them."
Okay, guys, this puts a whole new spin on coming out to dd. I am definitely not saying anything while I am here. I don't want to be kicked out or something worse. I had decided that if she asked, I would tell her, but that I was going to wait until after I told dh, so we could decide together what to do. She asked me last night what artist I had the most songs for on iTunes, and I know it is Melissa Etheridge. She seemed fine with that. Interesting turn of events here.

Big hugs for you Blue! And for your DD too, I can't imagine being with someone so closed minded. I can understand if you don't come out to her just yet, you need to think of your safety with him. Don't let his ignorance rain on your parade, enjoy this time with your DD. Not everyone will agree with your orientation, but it's their problem not yours! Being who you are is never a choice.

FGP Shannon who drives a 2006 red Toyota Prius! BTW, I get nearly 50 mpg which just proves that gay people are smarter than straight people! Just kidding!
Blue,
One thing I have noticed since coming out and talking to so many people gay and straight, that Men often have a harder time accepting gay men then gay women.
Of course you drive a Prius, babe!! I want it to be my next car! I have the standard lesbian truck...actually a Balzer.
I REALLY like the boyfriend and think that he is right for my dd. I think that he might come around, given time. He is kind and calm, somebody my dd needs. She has a bit of a powerful personality (I don't know where she gets that...LOL). It was just a weird conversation and makes me a bit hesitant. After I leave here, I'm sure they will talke about me and wonder. I will leave them with enough clues to figure it out, if they pay attention and it may eas the way.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I think that you are right about the gay male thing. Yeah, that female thing is supposed to be every straight guy's fantasy. You know, I have absolutely no problem with gay male sex and never have. I have not talked to my dd about it. I think when she was younger she had a problem, but over the years I have made enough comments to kind of change her views and I think she will be fine.
Thanks Caly for keeping me straight LOL

You can come to CA and drive my Prius any day! Shelley drives a big old dykey suburban!
I do think Caly has a point about the gay male ewwww factor. What kind of clues are you leaving? Maybe you should find a gay bookstore and leave them a copy of On Our Backs magazine! (Lesbian sex mag) I'm not very good at subtley am I?
Shannon
Geez, I thougt On Our Backs was a book. Shows you how much I have to learn, although I think I have grown by leaps and bounsds!
I think having the conversation with dd this afternoon was a start. I am going to take off my ring this evening. She already did the Melissa Etheridge thing with me. She is going to go through my iTunes playlist sometime soon and when she sees all "lesbian" music I have, that will be a real clue. This is assuming that she will recognize the artists as lesbian.
Any other subtle hints you could suggest?

On Our Backs is a magazine, but I think it's also a book of lesbian erotica. It's a pretty racy magazine too.........
Hmmmmmmmm subtle hints. Ask her if she wants to rent some movies tonight and come home with The L Word and Queer As Folk.........
Shannon
I am looking forward to renting Queer as Folk. I had seen it on the Blockbuster shelves and asked another woman about it. She had the same reaction about the guy sex as you did. Why don't people have the same reaction to girl on girl sex? It is an interesting social phenomena.
I am sitting here right this minute watching the movie Team America with my daughter. It is all done with puppets and two of the puppets(male and female) were just shown having sex about 7 different ways and nobody has said a thing. I was a wee bit uncomfortable, but it has passed. It's my daughter, after all, but she is 25. I gotta get over myself.

Yeah sex scenes with my Mom are a wee bit uncomfy and I'm 31........ I don't have any problem with gay male sex at all, but some people have the ewww factor. I saw the first 2 seasons on DVD and I need to get caught up! I'm dying for season 4 of The L Word to come out on DVD.
Your daughter is only 6 years younger than I am? Does that mean I can't flirt with the board stud?
Shannon
Honey, don't EVER think that way. I like 'em young. That's all I hang out with at work and they seem to like me there. At least they keep asking me to the parties. Well, truth be told, I like them young, middle, my age. I don't feel particularly old at all. It's just a number, babe. I am not a stud. lol Please flirt with me, it is soooo good for my ego.
What are you doing next Saturday???? I think I can fit you in between 7 and 9. After that my schedule is a little tied up with Marissa followed by Diana, and then there is Heather. Kim on Sunday at breakfast, Megan for brunch, and Sandy all afternoon. Okay, just kidding here...........
