Great topic, Caly!

I have at least 13 or 14 tattos. I'm thinking about getting two more tattoos, one of the coat of arms of my high school and the coat of arms of Harry Potter. There are people that have their entire body covered, all except of their face and hands. Now that's what I call addiction.

I've had to slow down or my entire body would have been covered. LOL!

Thanks and hugs,

Seb

I've noticed that many of the lesbians I've been around have tattoos. I don't know if they have more than heterosexual women. It would be interesting to look up the stats on that.

I did find this information on glbtq.com:

"...Tribal tattoos began to be reclaimed in the 1980s by rebellious punks and by gays and lesbians, and tattoos have continued to gain popularity among those in the counterculture.

Some use tattoos along with piercings to make a shocking statement that announces their alienation from society. Others choose tribal symbols in an effort to formalize their subculture, such as gays and lesbians who wear tattoos of pink and black triangles so that they will be recognizable to other gays.

Still others use tattoos as a sort of psychological ritual, using the pain of the tattoo to create a visual symbol of other pain. It is not uncommon among lesbian breast cancer survivors, for example, to tattoo a significant symbol around a mastectomy scar..."

I have the same interlocking heart tattoo that Caly does, but it's on my lower back, hidden from view. I got it more as something to share with Caly than anything else. It's more of a symbol of our love and commitment than a piece of art to show off.

It will be the only one I ever get. I DID NOT like the pain and don't want to go through it again. I'm glad I have one, but it's just not something I could get addicted to.

I think alot of lesbians get tattoos, I would say about 75% of the lesbians I know have at least 1 if not more. I do think there is a thing as too many tattoos, I would never tattoo my face but I am open to any place else. I have 1 tattoo (open celtic heart within a heart design with 2 intertwined S's, done in red and black on my right lower leg). My next tattoo will be on my upper left arm, 2 black connected female symbols surrounded by a rainbow tribal sun. I think it's a beautiful symbol of pride and I want 1 pride tattoo.

I would like to get several more as long as I can place them in easily hidden spots. I work in health care and I just feel it's more professional for me to have them covered. But, I do have several coworkers who have full arms and they are not required to cover them at work.

The pain sucks though, I was sweating like a pig when they did it. But, it couldn't have been too bad because I'm ready to go back for more!

Never like tattoos. I think it’s a hangup from when I was young and heard the stories from my mom when she thought all she has to worry about was me going out with the ‘bad’ boys in school. She told me tattoos are put on criminals so it can never be removed for life. Everybody knows he was in jail and lead a not honorable life and embarrassed his family. So she tell me to stay away from the ones with the tattoos or I’ll be embarressed where ever I go with a tattooed boy walking next to me. (yes, I’m still sane even with her influence so don’t even let that thought stay in your mind. *L*)

Tommorrow is the day. Although I think they are cool, it is one more step in the separation and the rest of my summer journey.

I was going to get a wolf (that's me) or the Japanese symbol for courage. Then I thought it would be a Celtic knot. Now, I don't know.

What is a tribal tattoo?

Here's some info on tribal tattoos:

The single most requested tattoo design. The most popular tribal designs are Maori, Haida and Polynesian designs. There is also great interest in Native American tattoo designs. The term "tribal" of course covers an astonishing array of tattoo design possibilities, from the traditional tribal tattoos of indigenous and aboriginal cultures, to the latest in graphic design for the body.

And here's a picture of one:

I thought I would post some Celtic symbols and their meanings for you

Claddagh - Love and friendship. Crown for Loyalty, Hands for Friendship, Heart for Love
Celtic Cross - the cross symbolizes the bridge between heaven and earth
Trinity Knot - 3 distinct yet interlocked levels: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual
Triquetra - unity and trinity of soul, heart and mind

Triple Spiral:
Represents the drawing of the three powers of maiden, mother and crone. It is a sign of female power and especially power through transition and growth.

Single Spiral:
Represents ethereal energy, and expansion of consciousness.

Five-fold:
This pattern also represents balance. The four outer circles symbolize the four elements: earth, fire, water, air. The middle circle unites all the elements with a goal to reach balance between all four elements or energies.

I can't say that most lesbians have tattoos, but I can say that most of the ones I know do.
