I am wondering if we could list some good books, links, music that are helpful/supportive/uplifting for coming out, for moral support, etc.?
I've already added the music of Melissa Etheridge ;)
My only resources so far, besides some links to news online, which aren't really what I'm looking for, have been two books.
"The Preacher's Son" by Marc Adams
"Joining the Tribe" by Linnea Due
What started my awakening process was hearing Marc Adams speak at our UU church a couple of Sundays ago. I bought his book and read it in a very few hours. Something happened inside me, and I found this board. :P
The other book belongs to a friend of mine, who actually lent it to me a long time ago when my DD was a teen and exploring being bisexual, and it got buried in one of my bookshelves. I found it because I emptied the bookshelf in preparation for painting. So, perhaps the Goddess made sure I'd find it? lol She does that to me, now & again. ;) It's about teens, mostly, and their struggles, interviews with them, all around the country, but in some ways, it still relates to me and my journey, too.
So, any suggestions? ;)

To be honest, I havent read an non fiction books about coming out except the Whole Lesbian Sex Book LOL
Mostly I read lesbian novels and there are a few I really enjoyed but I am not sure if its what you are looking for.
OK. Adding Holly Near to my list! lol Love that song. Will look for one of her CDs with that song on it. ;)
Fiction is cool. I like fun reading, too. ;) Are the novels romance type or mystery or ??? Authors? Then I'll browse online... :P

There are lots of mysterys out there but its not a genre I really like even in non lesbian fiction.
Super! I'll try them out.
I also like scifi and am currently reading Isaas Asimov's robot trilogy, since I just finished his Foundation series of 5 or 6 books, I'm looking to take a break and reading something else for entertainment. :P

Books I've enjoyed are "From Wedded Wife to Lesbian Life" and also "Telling Moments", which is a collection of coming out stories. My favorite poem when I was coming out, and still one of my favorites is "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou
A free bird leaps on the back
Of the wind and floats downstream
Till the current ends and dips his wing
In the orange suns rays
And dares to claim the sky.
But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage
Can seldom see through his bars of rage
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
Of things unknown but longed for still
And his tune is heard on the distant hill for
The caged bird sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
And the trade winds soft through
The sighing trees
And the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright
Lawn and he names the sky his own.
But a caged BIRD stands on the grave of dreams
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with
A fearful trill of things unknown
But longed for still and his
Tune is heard on the distant hill
For the caged bird sings of freedom.
Love the poem. :P
Added the books to my growing list! ;) Going shopping on-line! Hee! Hee!

Hi ML,
I searched back through our archives and found this information. This was from a post by Blue back in May that had a lot of helpful information (hope you don't mind, Blue):
About musicians - "Melissa Ferrick,"Drive" my favorite song of hers. It will knock your socks off. Then there's the Indigo Girls, Disappear Fear, kd lang, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, Tori Amos, Joan Armatrading, Erin McKeown, Cate Curtis, and the list goes on and on. If you go to Amazon and type in Melissa Ferrick or Melissa Etheridge, you will see on the left side of the screen a "listmania." People post lists of their favorite albums in a genre and you can get lots of ideas..."
Brandy (designergrl) listed several books by Lee Lynch. I've never heard of her, but the titles sounded pretty good.
I haven't read much non-fiction, but there is lots out there. Border's has a gay and lesbian section, and you can always do internet searches.
Hope this helps!
Hugs
WOW! :)) Thank you SO much for going through the trouble. I have been doing an archive search, myself. I did find Blue's music post. Even bookmarked it since she mentioned so many performers! :P I found that my library has a couple of Rita Mae Brown books, "Venus Envy" and Rubyfruit" plus "Family Outing" by Chastity Bono. Otherwise, my library is pretty barren of much in the way of non-fiction at all. And has few of the fiction writers.
I found a lot on-line. I will buy as I can. Unfortunately, two of the books mentioned, from leaving a marriage with a man to coming out and living as a lesbian, are both out of print. So I'll have to hunt for those...
From my archive search, I did get a good list, both music, and fiction and non-fiction, to give me a start, though! ;) I'm thinking, book-wise, I'm better off ordering on-line, but I am going to the library for the Rita Mae Brown books and a music store for one of Melissa Etherdige's albums. I may pre-order her new album (with "Message to Myself" on the video link) when I order a couple of books on-line, too. :P
Hugs,
