Today, I'm really feeling the discrimination that we are subjected to. It hasn't directly impacted us until we got down to business and seriously considered buying a house. Yesterday we got preapproved for a loan and will start looking at houses this weekend! Yay! My stomach is in knots but in a good way. Hopefully we will be out of our apartment by the end of November if all goes as planned.
Anyway, today I was looking at some legal documents that Caly and I really need to attend to, and we have VERY little protection. I know that you all know this, but it is so frustrating and complicated. Fortunately, there are a couple of gay-friendly lawyers in our town whom we will be contacting.
I know that in our state we will have to deal with inequality for a long time.

I'm so sorry...I think about those things as well.
This really burns me! Who is doing the discrimination? Your realtor should help you out and be very protective of you. YOu can look for a Gay friendly realtor. Lots of us around.
Are you looking on your own? Do you need help findin someone good? I can help, no matter where you are in the states. Just say the word. I will research a better fit for yo if you need one.

Storm..you just need to find the right person. You should not have to look separately. I know, i help gay clients all the time. Also i think you are in law enforcement? In my state (FL) i would tell you about state money that helps HEROS (law enforcement, firefighters, teachers, nurses) get low interest grant and loans to help with downpayment assistance...some of it (grant money is later forgiven) meaning you dont have to pay it back.
Most realtors dont know about it but i really looked for that in my area. I can get city, state and county combined if my clients qualify and i give 1/3 of my hard earn commission to my buyers to help with closing costs. I created my own Affinity Program to help you guys. Because I created my own business, i can be generous that way (cool, right?) I negotiate hard for sellers to pay closing costs for my buyers. There are so many options people dont know about. WHat state do you live in? It be great in you were in Central FL? lol...but maybe when the time comes, give me a shout and i will find a good realor who is gay friend if not gay herself.
Trust me...i can shake the trees and find out! lol! I have my ways...lol
I think sexual orientation should be protected...! Familian status is...sexual orientation really should be.

Yes that is exactly what we are talking about but it says right in the article that is NOT the same as if you are married couple.
Thanks for your thoughts and information, Roxy. Like Caly said, the tax implications can be huge for unmarried couples who own homes. Even having joint tenancy with rights of survivorship (which is what we're looking at), the transfer of property is not tax free as it is with married couples. The transfer is subject to estate and gift taxes. Also, we're thinking about our children too and how to protect them. Basically, we will have to be very diligent about getting our wills in order and making sure we protect every part of our lives as much as we can.
While we do have a wonderful broker and RE agent, my frustration is with the inequality in the tax laws and also who the court automatically favors (the family members of unmarried couples, not the partner)
