As many of you know, I practice meditation daily. During the actual attack, I have the most success with breathing, positive thinking & relaxation exercises. I use aromatherapy in my home, finding lavendar & citrus oils

Also, if time permits, I like to read when I'm feeling an anxiety attack coming on. Usually this is when there is nothing I can do about the cause of the anxiety (such as stressing about work related things during the weekend) and it gets my mind off of the anxiety and calms me down.

All of a sudden a few years ago I started to get panic attacks.

Hi Bennie,

I'm so glad to hear that you are working through the problems that were behind those panic attacks. Panic attack that appear for apparently no reason are the worst. You know there has to be something behind them, but what???

>>>The singing and/or whistling forced me to breath and also helped take my mind off of the panic attack.<<<

This is very interesting. Luckily I never suffered from panic attack. My specialty was anxiety attacks, and luckily I never had any of those while driving. However, when I'm alone in the car I, too, will sing along with the radio. I have found that I prefer to drive alone because I can sing (I wouldn't think of subjecting any poor passenger to the horrid sound of my off-key singing voice). Singing just makes me feel calmer and more at ease while driving. I can totally see how it would help with your panic attacks.

Brightest Blessings,
Annika

Jan,

I use a combination of things like exercise (swimming), relaxation, vitamins, medation, postive thinking, and Dr. David Burns The Feeling Handbook.

I also use a combination of things. I do relaxation exercises, exercise, take vitamins, do the positive thoughts thing, as well as prayer. This last one is a newer approach for me, but I'm working of letting go of the control issue that so often drives my anxiety and prayer helps.
