I knew that we had some migraine inflicted people here so I thought maybe this would be of some help. South Beach sent it to me this morning. Debbie

Avoiding Migraine Triggers

The following Daily Dish is part of a series on headaches for National Headache Awareness Week

About 28 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Thirty percent of migraines are caused by foods known to trigger intense headache pain, according to the National Headache Foundation. If you're a migraine sufferer, you may be able to avoid or limit the occurrence of migraines by eliminating these triggers from your diet.

Migraines—usually characterized by constant throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head—are often associated with consumption of foods containing additives such as nitrites, yellow food coloring, or MSG (monosodium glutamate). Foods to avoid in this category include processed or smoked meats, some Chinese food, canned meats, and certain Asian seasonings. You should also try to avoid foods containing a natural headache-promoting substance known as tyramine. These include red wine and other types of alcohol, aged cheeses, peanuts, pickled foods, overly ripe avocados, and chocolate.

In addition to eliminating migraine triggers from your diet, you should also make sure you eat all your daily meals, get enough sleep, and cut down on your caffeine intake. Your best bet is prevention, but if a serious headache does begin, your doctor can prescribe medications to help you deal with migraine pain.
