Dr.'s Appointment

Hi All!

I had an appointment with my new doctor today. He seemed to really take me serious and know about Anixiety and Panic. That is a good sign. He told me that Anixiety is triggered by an event but Panic just happens. That's why panic is so confusing. He told me to up my Prozac to 40mg a day and the Klonopin to 1 pill twice a day. He wants to see me in 3 weeks.

I also asked him about those stomach pains that I have been having. He told me that it is probably IBS (Irritable Bowel Symdrome) he told me to change my diet and that we will probably do a colonoscopy. Tonight the pain is worse in my stomach so I called the doctor. He told me to go to the ER. I told him that it wasn't that bad but if it got worse then I would go. Right now I am just trying a heating pad. Hopefully that helps because I have a meeting to go to and it is bad enough to have the anxiey with out pain.

Does anyone else have IBS in addition to there Anxiety? Any suggestions?

I used to take a med for that stomach pain. It was strictly from anxiety. I forgot the name, but it was some kind of relaxer. I wish I could remember it for you! Be sure to tell the doc if the pain is strictly in your stomach. Why should you get a colonoscopy, if you have no problems in the bowels, you know? However, an upper GI exam might be in order. I don't think I have irritable bowel syndrome, but I do have a problem with having to run to the bathroom too often when I am really stressed. I usually lose weight, too, if the stress goes on for days or weeks. Or months, ick!

So, where exactly is your pain?

Renee,

The pain is in my lower abdomin mostly on the left side. The doctor pushed in that area today and it did hurt. The reason that you would have a coloscopy is to rule out any other problems. IBS is a disorder that is diagnosed by ruling everything else out. IBS also has do with the colen not just the bowels.

Sarah,
I also have diverticulosis. A sign of actual diverticulitis (an infection of the pockets in the colon) actually produces pain in the lower left hand side.

Mine was diagnosed with a CT scan.
Have you had one to rule that out before having to go through a colonoscopy?

Heather,

I had a cat scan last year but not one recently. I don't know what to do! When I called the doctor to tell him the pain was worse he said to go to the ER. But last time I went to the ER I was there for 5 hours and they didn't figure out anything.

Oh, dear! I was hoping it'd get better. Last time, was the pain the same - same place, same intensity? My husband actually got quite sick when he had his bout of diverticulitis. If it's very localized, I would be concerned about diverticulitis, especially in the area you mentioned. Please don't hesitate to go to the E.R. if the pain continues to get worse. Oh, and what tests did they do in the E.R. last time?

Renee,

The pain is the stongest in my left side but I know also feel minor pain on the right and in my back. At the ER last year they did blood test, urine test, and two catscans. The pain is manageable just scary because I don't usally get this.

Hi, Sarah! I'm getting into this discussion quite late. The pain from IBS can be intense. I suffer from it & whether the anxiety comes first or the pain causes the anxiety, I am never too sure. I just wanted to post the link for the the fantastic IBS board we have here on iVillage. They have been alot of help to me. The questions about testing, whether or not you should have it or what tests to have or giving you advice on the prep before a colonoscopy, it's all there! I do hope you feel better. (((hugs))) jan

Sarah,
Were they able to rule out diverticulitis at the ER last night through the cat scans?

How are you feeling now?

Heather,

I did not go to the ER last night because I didn't want to sit there for 5 hours. I do feel a little better this morning, the pain is still there but it is not as bad. I just ate breakfast so we will see what happens.
