Hi. I just wrote the following message on the rape survivors and PTSD boards. Sorry to clog the boards, but I'm trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this. The two medications I'm on are Lexapro and Lorazepam (Ativan). Thank you.
Hi. I was date raped three months ago. For about six weeks afterwards, I was in a bad place emotionally. I couldn't stop thinking about the details, I bled for over a month, I cried all the time, I stayed in one place in my home, I couldn't eat, I didn't shower or take care of myself, I barely slept, and basically every second of my life was spent dealing with it. I started therapy and went on medications, and especially after a few weeks of daily counseling I began to feel better. Over the last six weeks, I've been eating normally, starting to take care of myself again, and putting my life back together. It's not "over," but I do feel like the worst of it has passed. Emotionally and psychologically, I feel better about myself.
Recently I've noticed a weird problem. My hair is falling out! If it hangs in the right places, it's hidden, but if I lift my hair up my scalp is getting bare. My eyelashes are starting to fall out, too. I noticed more hair in the drain about two weeks ago, and I started noticing how thin it is on my scalp several days ago. It may have started before that, I'm not sure. (I am in my twenties.)
I've heard that stress is a cause of hair loss. I know this is weird, and not the main thing to worry about after a rape, but has anyone else had anything like this??? I'm so scared that it's going to get worse and I won't be able to hide it anymore.

Hi & welcome to the board. I am very sorry for what has happened. It is good to hear that therapy & meds are helping you back to some degree of normalcy.
None of us are professionals here. You have a legitimate concern in hair loss, but one that requires a professional's attention. I hope you will consider seeing a doctor right away about this condition & get it nipped in the bud.
My T&P's are with you. Post an update if you can. Our community is open to you for support & we would welcome you to join us in posting or in chats. Good luck & GBU! (((hugs))) jan
Hi,
I really don't have any advice for you although I suspect that your hair loss is stress related. You should see you Dr. though to get the correct diagnosis.
My heart goes out to you. It is so good that you reconize the fact that you need help. You are doing all the right things for yourself.
I am also in lexapro, it seems to be agreeing with me pretty well.
Take Care... P&PT your way,
~Heather
Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience, but glad you are getting help! I have had hair loss due to stress in my family. My aunt and my grandma had it. But it was never so bad they couldn't hide it. It was called alopecia. But, I don't know if that's what you have. If it really concerns you, I would do what the other girls said, and see a doctor for it.
Take care,
Renee
