Ok, with the medication i am on, is it ok to drink? I take lexapro in the morning, and resperdal and xanax 3 times a day(its more an as needed). If I only took the X and R combination twice a day and then had a few drinks-would i get hurt? How do you all drink with your meds. I know it is dangerous to drink and then take xanax, but if i had a dose like 4 hours before I started drinking do you think itd be ok? I miss being able to sit around and chat with my friends over a cocktail or 2! help!

You are a pretty savvy young woman, Katie. I think you know the score. There isn't one medication that you mentioned that anyone, including you should be drinking alcohol with. The info is readily available. I am positive it is right on your prescription bottles. If you don't believe the bottles, then check with your physician or pharmacist.

Noone can be sure *how much* alcohol it would take to harm an individual. Thus, we're told not to drink any alcohol @ all. I am certain you have heard the term *accidental overdose.* That's what happens when folks mix meds & alcohol. They die from the lethal combination they unknowingly consumed.

I cannot speak for all folks in our community. But most would agree that the time to drink & chat with friends while taking meds, is over. That way we can be safe & enjoy our lives for a long time to come. jan

I wouldn't take the chance, with any of those meds. Like Jan says, no one knows how much is too much. My own mom mixed Ativan and alcohol at my wedding 16 years ago with embarrassing results for both her and I. It caused the biggest fight we ever had, and we rarely fight. Your biggest concern is for your own safety and health, but I just wanted to throw in that you can unknowingly hurt other, physically or emotionally, with this combination.

Sorry to be so blunt on this subject! You can perhaps have a non-alcoholic drink? Some of them are quite good.

I know I know, but it is just so frusterating! I already feel like I am out of things and different from everybody, but now when I feel good enough to go out at night and try to be normal--things still aren't normal! Thanks for all of your advice though--Katie

Katie,
I completely agree with the advice you already got here. I also totally understand how you feel though, because all my friends like to go out and drink. I just try to remind my self that drinking can wait...taking care of your anxeity is much more important for the moment.
I dont know about xanax, but i asked my psychiatrist about drinking while taking lexapro. she said it was alright to do in moderation, but see how one drink makes you feel first. i tried half a drink and felt really dizzy, so I stopped and decided to just hang out sober for while...I totally think its worth it and I hope you will agree too.
take care,
Mia
