Any good books on anxiety?
| Mon, 06-27-2005 - 2:24pm |
I was in the campus book store today looking through some self-help books ... Has anybody been able to find any book that has been helpful in dealing with (or even just understanding) anxiety ... I get so angry with myself and feel so "abnormal" - maybe something to read might help ... Just thought I'd ask. As always, thanks and hope everybody is having a good day.

I suppose anything is possible, Maribeth. That kind of question usually gets answered by *you* in therapy. Honestly, I have never had a therapist answer something so directly. They always wanted to know what *I* thought!
I do know that it's very common when we're stressed & anxious to see a connection between our feelings & events, whether real or imagined. For instance, if I had a panic attack in the bank, I would want to avoid the bank & think in some way the bank caused the attack. It's not very rational thinking when I am doing well. However, it sure makes perfect sense when I am overly anxious. (I hope that you can understand what I'm saying. I am a bit sleepy.) I hope that helps a little. You are doing all you can. It is just a difficult time for you. It will get better. Honest! (((hugs))) jan
Edmund J. Bourne, Ph.D., author of "The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook"
(Which is at the top of Jan's list)
I thank you for the post because it reminded me I really need to be using the workbook as a tool, especially lately.
And you know, It might be helpful for your bf to read it to, to maybe help him understand what you are dealing with. I know how hard it is to put what you are feeling into words regarding p/a, but I believe there is also a section in the book that deals with how to explain to ppl.
I hope this helps, and I am betting all of the books Jan posted are really good. So I may have to go to the book store one of these days too! :0)
hugs, shasta
A book that has helped me out TREMENDOUSLY is called "The Anxiety cure: an eight-step program to getting well" by Doctors Robert L.Dupont, Elizabeth Spencer and Caroline Dupont.
It goes from chapter to chapter, first outlining the anxiety disease in depth.. telling you how it may have began and exactly what is happening in your body to produce the symptoms. And then goes on to explain the different types of anxiety, medication and therapy. It also has a GREAT 8 step program to practice getting well.
This book not only helped me learn everything about my anxiety that I could but I was finally able to self-diagnose myself as to which anxiety I had and also find the best medications that would work for me. I'm on a good track to getting well.
The best part is there is alot in the book for your family members or "support person" to read and follow along with. It asks them to participate and helps them to better understand exactly what you're going through.
Hope it helps you, because it helped me! :)
Has anyone read this book?
Embracing the Fear : Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks
This topic has really made me think and want to get some more good books regarding p/a (and especially agoraphobia) and how to tackle these problems.
Thanks and have a great day! shasta
