Good morning. I read your post on our board. I did see a therapist for 2 years b4 I stopped drinking altogether. My reasons for going to her were b/c I didn't know how to deal with anything without drinking. I found myself drinking for all reasons. Just as you may have read, only you can stop your drinking. Breaking the cycle is an individual thing and there are stages that you go through. I have recommended Under The Influence by Dr. James Milam and Katherine Ketcham. This would be a good start for those who wonder about themselves.
One piece of advice that I can give you is to be completely honest about yourself when you go, or else you'll be wasting your money. Explain that you may be having a problem with alcohol. It will give the therapist a heads up.
Keep posting on the board and keep asking questions. Let's do this together!
Hi Amy! My father was a heavy drinker only at night also! He was a very angry man and moody! I stopped drinking at around age 30. It just made me more angry when I was drinking! My father was abusive to us all- I have been married for 35 years. I have panic and anxiety. I had cognitive therapy because I was agoraphobic. I am taking Paxil and Xanax. The cog therapy was very helpful and I overcame my many many fears! I was pretty much housebound at that time. It has been 10 years since then and I am doing good!! I now go to a hypnostist for self esteem issues and relaxation- He is an excellent therapist. At some point he is going to try and help me deal with the past since he believes I still hold on to the anger! My hubby was a binge drinker up until 2 years ago-- this was very difficult for me to deal with because of my past. Going through menopause just made matters worse! I was very angry and would have rages something awful!! Those TG have stopped! I must also say BE CAREFUL ALCOHOL AND XANAX ARE A LETHAL COMBO!! Therapy is hard work I wish you success! Hope we can chat sometime! Take care, Judy
Here are my impressions, Amy. Most therapists prefer CBT, as it deals with issues successfully.
