My 17 year old daughter is supposed to be going to england and the netherlands for a trip of a lifetime to play field hockey-in two weeks- she is not scared- says these things can happen anywhere- i , in the other hand, am paniced and anxiety filled- thanks in part to my issues and common sense. just wanted to get this off my chest with the new info coming out now. i know we can't let the terrorists win- but this is my baby.

Hi Elaine, I can completely understand your concern, any mother would be worried!
this might be a very cold and calculated way of looking at things, but the probability of dying or getting hurt in a terrorist attack is much lower than the probability of getting into a serious or fatal car accident. In fact, we have a tendency to overestimate the risk of terrorist attacks and other bad things because the media sensationalizes them. I know it sounds SO cold, but its the truth. my dad is a statistician and he always remind me of things like this, I think it helps you live your life a little more free of anxiety. I know your daughter will have a great time abroad and come home to you in one piece!

Oh, Elaine - how scary for you! But don't let your anxiety come off on her, I'm always so careful around my kids in fear of them learning my bad "habits" and irrational fears. On the other hand, what a wonderful opportunity for her. I'd love to go to England. She's a very lucky girl.

Elaine, We love our children so much ... you are right to be worried. I worry when my 4 y.o. goes to the park with his grandparents, lol. And when my 24 y.o. was in labor, I was a nervous wreck. It's normal, but like Mia said, I'm sure she will be okay. I honestly worry more about things here in the U.S. It's a scary world we live in. I'm sure you raised her to be a smart young lady. Everyone is being very vigilant and England will be watching even more closely during this time!

Hugs,
Sheri Ann
