I am flying to california tomorrow and i am deadly scared that the plane will be hijacked/crash. Any words of comfort would be nice. I haven't been able to sleep in a few days because I keep thinking about it. I don't think this fear is something xanax can cure. Anybody else afraid to fly?

HI there,

You will be ok. That is first and foremost. Flying is very scary, I agree. However, the likelyhood of something happening is slim to none. You'd be at more risk driving in a car. Have whomever you are traveling with hold your hand (tightly!) during takeoff and landing. That always helps me. Bring relaxing music, too. Also, see if you could take a valium instead of a xanax. It will relax you more. Try, only if you can, to focus on the vacation and how much fun you will have, instead of how you will get there. I hope these words help a little. I know how very hard and scary it can be. Best of luck and have fun in California.

Oh i think you can do it for sure. I use to love airplanes been on them since i was 2 and i loves it up until about 2 years ago when i was dignosed with anxiety disorder. Now everytime i go on the airplane i panic and start think what if we crash and i know since im on it the planes going to crash and blah blah. its hard but i just did it a couple of months ago and i was on there for about 6 hours i did good. lol for the most part i mean my head would not stop thinking. And i do know there are pills you can take if you are afraid to fly. I dont know what they are called but my honey thinks its this one were not for sure how to spell it but i think this is the one for sure (valium) your suppose to take it like 45 mins before getting in. You may want to try it. Good luck and dont worry were more like to crash in a care then a airplane. Its like one in a million or eve bigger for a airplane to acually crash. and security is pretty hard right now too so the terrist no need to worry about. okay. Good lucky and i will say a prayer for you. Just keep active on the flight and you will do fine. (btw ? are you going alone?

You have gotten some good advice. I would just add that the belly breathing really works for me & even a few cleansing breaths every 15 or 20 minutes throughout the flight should help. How I wish I could go with you! I will be keeping you in my T&P's tomorrow. Good luck. Have a wonderful time. Give us a play by play when you have a minute. We appreciate knowing what you find is successful in overcoming fears. (((hugs))) jan

Katie, you're back! lol! Are you a lurker now? I remember when you went away last time, I think it was to your aunt & uncles maybe - you were so worried, but you did great! I think you will do just as good this time on the airplane. Just sit back and relax, listen to music or watch the movie. Have fun!

Katie,

I know that it is scary to fly.

I used to work for United Airlines and did a lot or traveling. What always comforted me was the fact that the pilots and flight attendnts are so well trained and the pilot has a HUGE checklist to go through before takeoff. That includes a "walk around" the plane.

The ground crew also does numerous checks around the plane also.

Just remember that the pilot and crew want just as much as you do to land safely so keep all that in mind. Its their lives also. I have had the pleasure of meeting Capt. Al Hayes. He was the pilot of the UAL

HI THERE EEEeeek!!! BY NOW I HOPE YOU ARE SAFE AND SOUND AT HOME. I HAVE TO FLY OVER THE WHOLE "BLOODY" PACIFIC OCEAN TO THE US TO BE WITH MY DAUGHTER WHILE SHE HAS A BABY. THE FLIGHT IS OVER 16 HOURS LONG. I AM SOOO SCARED OF FLYING THAT I GET PANIC ATTACKS ON THE PLANE. I HAVE FLOWN MANY TIMES, OF COURSE AND I CAN NOT SEEM TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT. I THINK IT'S A CONTROL THING. YOU KNOW...IF I WAS FLYING THE PLANE I WOULD FEEL BETTER. ANYWAY, WISH ME LUCK OKAY? SINCERELY, JAMIEJC
