Hey guys, I am having a really hard time still with obsessive thoughts. I have a hard time distracting myself because when I have these thoughts I feel like I 'have to worry about them' to fix it. I keep digging up holes.
I mostly have a hard time with the past. Anyone have advice on how to conquer obsessive thoughts? It's really difficult. thanks

My therapist had me read a book called "Stop Obsessing" it was awsome and really helpful! You can get it at barnes and knoble for like 15 dollars....

I found it very informative and it helped me understand some of the things I was thinking and taking them from worriesome to just dumb thoughts and I rarely think of them now.

Here's an interesting article, Nina.http://health.ivillage.com/mentalhealth/mhdepress/0,,dd,00.html

I have suffered with obssessive thoughts, mostly about my children being harmed. That is my OCD. Unfortunately, I was never lucky enough to obssessively clean my house or something even remotely constructive:) It is hard to change your thought patterns, but keeping busy does help. Any distraction that uses another area of your brain will give you some relief. Making a list, singing, doing math problems, etc. It doesn't help to fight them. You need to reassure yourself that they won't harm you in anyway. That they are not true or real. You won't act on them.

As for thoughts of the past, have you tried writing them down? Some ppl have relief this way. Then, they can tear up the paper & throw it away. Also, meditation works. You're able to relax & as time goes on, you can empty your mind of thoughts. HTH Good luck! (((hugs))) jan

Thanks, I think I will check out that book, and reading the link really helped and made me feel better.
I have wrote down my thoughts and feelings and that does help for a bit. I actually find myself doing it alot. I just get very frusterated because i feel like it should be so easy to think logically about the 'thoughts' and dismiss them.

In addition to the wonderful support you'll receive on this board, you might want to visit the Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Disorders board, too

Im in the same boat as you nina, I have obsessive thoughts throughout the day and it keeps me up at night also. I finally got several hours of sleep last night although not all in a row but still better than none at all. Im about to go out to the mall and hang out for a bit but I feel like ill never shake my thoughts although I know time will help (hopefully).

k210,
do you take any medications at all? I have generalized anxiety and I have been taking Remeron for about 3 months, I also started on Buspar recently. Since taking the medication I do feel better and the obsessive thoughts are better than before, but I still have trouble with them and that scares me because I feel out of control when I can't fix the thoughts.
What kind of thoughts do you guys have??
