I AM AFRAID TO FLY

I AM A U.S. CITIZEN WHO LIVES IN AUSTRALIA AND I HAVE TO FLY TO THE STATES TO BE WITH MY DAUGHTER WHO IS HAVING HER FIRST CHILD. IHATE FLYING. THE FLIGHT IS OVER 16 HOURS LONG WITH ALL THE TERRIBLE BUMPS AND NOISES AND SOUNDS THAT ALWAYS MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I WISH I HAD MY OWN PARACHUTE. I GET SO NERVOUS THAT I FEEL LIKE I AM HAVING A HEART ATTACK. AND I AM ONLY IN MY 40'S. IS THERE ANY ADVICE FOR ME TO REMAIN CALM? WITHOUT HAVING TO RESORT TO GIN AND TONICS THE WHOLE BLOODY FLIGHT. ALSO, IF THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO IS A PILOT OR A AIRLINE PERSON WHO COULD HELP ME THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!! THANKYOU.
SIGNED: NERVOUS!!!

Have you considered asking your doc for something to take prior to the flight? Maybe he/she could prescribe a mild tranquilizer to help you sleep or an anti-anxiety med like xanax for the flight. I would definitely ask for something! That's a long flight! I, too, am afraid of flying and I know I couldn't make a flight that long without taking something! Good luck!

Hi & welcome to our community. You are not alone. The fear of flying has been mentioned many times before. I have tried unsuccessfully to search our archives for some good posts. I did come up with these 2 threads that might be of help. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-bhpanic&msg=17273.1

Hi there...
I worked for United Airlines for years prior to having children.
I worked in all areas of airport operations...I worked out on the ramp with the planes loading and unloading as well as all the other various duties..ex. plane pushback, loadplanning. I worked gate, baggage and ticket counter.
Anyway, I have flown MANY times and I can assure you

THANKS AGAIN FOR WRITING ME
TAKE CARE, CHEERS JJ
No, I don't think your hopeless at all. If you read back in the archives about me you might say the same about me..lol
You will have a great flight and a great time meeting your new grandson. It will all be worth it! The noises and turblance are just a part of it. Things peoperly working and air pockets, thats all.
If it wasn't safe ex. too much turbulance or bad weather in flight, they would reroute you around it. Pilots have families also and want the best for their passengers.
When are you leaving? As Sheri Ann said, please look into some meds and let the flight attendent know that you are a weary traveler. They will pay attention to that.
Take Care
