I'm glad to see someone who isn't on 5 different meds trying to work out their issues which ultimately can only be helped through hard work in therapy. My advice, however, IMHO, is to first decide if your issues warrant a visit or two to a therapist, counselor, or better yet, a psychiatrist. Don't try to work out anxiolytics or anti-depressants with a primary care doc. Usually, the issues are neglected and the problem becomes worse unless you talk things out and find out what you can do to help yourself. Also, a psych. might find it helpful to give you an emergency med for when you have an attack, such as klonopin or xanax. If you have concerns about dependency, there are other routes, such as buspar or vistaril. Whatever you do, don't ignore the problem. That's how you end up in a psych ward, like I did. It's not a barrel of laughs.

Hey Jen, welcome to the board! I think you'll find this to be a great supportive community where you'll find lots of support and insight.

our backgrounds very similar. I am also 25, working on my graduate degree in community psychology, my end goal is to do research. I worked as a case manager at a community mental health center for a few years after college. I have also had anxiety my entire life, and was officially diagnosed with a panic disorder when i was in highschool. right now i would say my anxiety is in remission, but it comes and goes.

anyway, you should join us for chat tuesday and thursdays at 9pm eastern time!

Jen....welcome to the board these are a great bunch of ladies that offer alot of support and insight. I've also suffered anxiety for most of my life and up until 6months ago was able to pretty well control it. In May of this year I became unable to even leave my own home without suffering major panic attacks. I also have worked in the mental health field and have a degree in Mental Health Technology. Feel free to join in our chats and answer our posts or post yourself.

I agree that therapy can be very helpful and can fully help some people. I also know that there are some people with chemical imbalances who need medicatio. I am sure you did not mean anything personal about those of us on medication (I am only on 3 by the way). But didn't find this very supportive for those of us who have to rely on medication. I may be being sensitive this morning as I am going through a hard time myself. Sorry if I took the comment personally, but I think we should support those who need meds and those who can be helped solely with therapy.

Thanks.

Hi Jen and a very BIG WELCOME! :0)
I am so glad you found our board, it has been a great support to me, and has helped me so much. We have so many wonderful, caring people here, that are going through the same experiences that you are, so we totally understand.
Please come back soon and post as often as you would like.
Also, I wanted to wish you and your dh a Happy 2nd Anniversary!!
And I also enjoyed your favorite quote on your bio:
'If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own backyard, because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with. -- Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz'
That made my heart smile <3
Looking forward to hearing more about you very soon.
hugs!

Thanks Heather. I also read later about the meds. I think it was in a different thread. Guess I was just feeling sensitive because I know I can't do it without the meds. I've also tried. It wasn't pretty. I am doing better on and off. I have a lot of life changes going on right now and will get through them and it helps to come to the board. My new pdoc has not been the help that I hoped she would be. I am going back soon and will be more firm with her about what needs should be addressed. Thank you for your offer of help. I always read the posts and you help so many people. I can't wait to get my new computer so that I can chat with everyone.
