Serenity Prayer?
| Tue, 10-04-2005 - 12:39pm |
I have never been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder nor been to the doctor at all about it. Over the last couple of months I have noticed that I worry over small things and snowball the problem in my head. It causes me a lot of discomfort. I realize most of the thoughts arent based on anything realistic. I come out of the fog and realize that even my behavior is affected by these thoughts. This is becoming a problem for me. I feel like there is always a looming issue in my head. I want to relax and have no worries or troubles. Does this all sound like it could be GAD?
I was talking to someone today and she recommended I read soemthing called the "serenity prayer". Has anyone heard of this? I will do an internet search for it and maybe post it on my wall (and here!)

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I Cannot change…
Courage to change the things I can
And Wisdom to know the difference…
I think this is the short version, but you get the point. Someone just recently reminded me of this prayer and it is a big help. You do sound like you may have GAD but some people need medication (me) and some can get through without.
Either way, I hope this helped at least a little.

Funny that you mention that, yesterday I bought a stained glass nightlight that says tha prayer on it. It is the basis of AA but applies to all of us. My Father was a member of AA and loved it and I didn't undertsand what the prayer really meant
Thank you!
I am going to try to work through this on my own first tackling destructive thoughts at the onset. I think awareness of the negative thoughts is the first step (and changing them to a positive thought). It helps to talk to someone about it though.
I guess I feel like maybe I can work thru this being that I am a Behavioral Therapist by profession. Goodness me.
Good luck to you and thanks again for your response.
That is very touching that you put that coin on your Father's grave. He passed down those positive thoughts to you which are vital for you to live peacefully. What a great father! I'm sure that was a great honor to him for you to put the coin at his gravesite.
Thanks for your response and the links! The second clip with the music was really nice.
:)
Have a wonderful day!
Hi & welcome to our community. We're so happy you found us. You are NOT alone. Hopefully you can find some support here from others who have experienced much of what you feel.
None of us are professionals. We cannot diagnose an anxiety disorder. It's always good to get a physical from your family doctor & be checked for medical conditions that might appear as anxiety. It never hurts to err on the side of caution. You probably are due for a check-up anyway. I suggest you do that first. Self diagnosis isn't recommended.
The Serenity Prayer is very helpful to me. I am always *borrowing trouble* as my gramma used to say. I have a hard time letting things go. Facing our fears & insecurities is a life long challenge, but you can succeed. We're all works in progress when it comes to anxiety. Join in our discussions & allow our caring folks to share their thoughts on ways to cope. We care & want you to live a good life! Good luck & GBU! (((hugs))) jan
